Identifying remote IP?

Hey everyone!

I've googled and no solution to this problem that I am facing.

I have a Raspberry Pi 2 that I always plug into my router at home and then ssh into it (by looking up the IP in the router's IP pool).

Now I am on the move and just have an RJ45 cable that i plug in directly into my laptop and this where I am stuck! How do I find the IP that is assigned to the RPi (by my laptop I assume).

I access the internet over WiFi and the LAN port of the laptop connects to the RPi. I've tried:
Code:
arp -a
and
Code:
ping -a raspberrypi
both of which do not seem to work unless I'm doing something wrong.

Any ideas would be of great help. Thanks!

Re: Identifying remote IP?

What OS are you using on your rasp pi? I believe that you should configure static IP on a single subnet with your laptop to have direct access to it

Try Fing. It's android software and when you're connected to network shows you every device using that network with its ip, mask, gateway and more. I've used it few times and can say it's quite useful.

Re: Identifying remote IP?

The IP assigned for Rs Pi is assigned by your router(for default settings). Please login to router page and check an option for connected devices ,there you can find MAC ID and IP of each device connected to the network.
