Re: Which OS do you prefer for VPS?

Acctually, in normal you just can choose between Linux and Window to use as your VPS Operation System.

We need to determine the reason and the goal that we choose which one.
1. Windows
If your application or source code site is base on the Programming like below, you need to choose Windows :
- ASP Classic
- ASP.NET
- MSSQL (Microsoft SQL Server)
- MS Access (Microsoft Access)
- Visual Basic Development
- C#
- Remote Desktop (dedicated server only)

Advantages:
- Graphical Interface, too easy to use and manage your system windows VPS.
- A lot of instruction with the images to follow.
- You will have the support from the author of App License or Windows Microsft Corp.

Disadvantages:
- App or OS Windows usually need the fee license. It will cost so much money to keep them work in long time.
- It so heavy to run the OS and app, it will consume so many resource in your system and you need to pay more for the resource price to work.

2. Linux
Advantages:
- Free opensource and tools (expect RedHat). Since Linux is open source, you don’t have to worry about costs associated with licensing fees, or having any kind of special software to run with it.
- You can install the minimize installation with the small disk consumed.

Disadvantages:
- That you need to have a good knowledge about Linux to manage, control and optimize your system.
- It's not easy to use for beginer, but trust me everyone always think it hard till the time you really put your hand and your head on it.

So in summary, a Linux VPS is perfect for businesses that love open source, want a budget friendly option and have the tech skills on hand to manage the server.

I prefer Linux, Debian or Ubuntu. But I using CentOS too, mostly for legacy reason.

For most users the distribution is not matter anymore while most of them using one of the webpanel: cpanel.com, serversuit.com, webmin.org, etc.

It can be significant only if you have to configure your server by hand.

Re: Which OS do you prefer for VPS?

The most obvious answer is Linux, specifically Ubuntu or Debian. Both are widely used, well documented, with plenty of online help from other people. I have a VPS and I have installed Debian 32 bit on it. I love using Debian because, it is pretty easy to understand, maintain and includes tons of packages. I have even managed to set up a VPN server on my VPS.
