CentOS is the most widely used. You can also use the Debian and Ubuntu as your knowledge of expertise.

cPanel can be installed in CentOS, if Debian and Ubuntu you have to look for parallels panel.

True, you have to consider what software you plan to use on the vps too. Check that what you want to use it for is compatible with your OS. CentOS is one of the most widely used as most popular software is fully compatible

I prefer Linux CentOS. It's very stable.

Linux is free, open source, easier intergrate open source languages but using SSH which is not as intuitive as the Windows interface. If you like cPanel then go with Linux

I think it would depend on you. My husband likes https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CentOS too. He use it mainly because it is meant to run servers.
