Re: unlimited bandwidth ?

Hi,

Whenever a web host's site states that they offer unlimited bandwith, make
sure to read the AUP/TOS to get an idea of how their unlimited bandwith plan
works. Webmasters everywhere usually have had troubles with unlimited
bandwith hosts when it comes to heavy bandwith usage.

Re: unlimited bandwidth ?

Why do you think someone will provide unlimited bandwidht. Those who claim they do it usually put some restcritions on bandwidth so don't have unlimited connections.

Re: unlimited bandwidth ?

Unlimited bandwidth is not possible but unmetered is possible bcoz bandwidth is a commodity that someone needs to pay for eventually. The term unlimited is truly a marketing scam and the companies offering unlimited bandwidth do not last for a long time in the market. So, don't prefer such companies and nothing in the world is unlimited.

Re: unlimited bandwidth ?

I agree with James-A's statement, unlimited bandwidth is just a scam to bring in more business. There is no way anyone can accually offer a unlimited amount of bandwidth. The connection is capped somewhere so only a certain amount is physically possible.

Re: unlimited bandwidth ?

The legit "unlimited" hosts sell their service by connection speed. For eg, unlimited 1Mbps or 10Mbps connections will sell at a premium and they are still limited by the size of the pipe. So doing some rough math, a 1Mbps connection should limit you to ~320GB of b/w per month.

People/hosts may say they offer unlimited bandwidth, and that's a mistake believing that there is such thing, there's really only "unlimited" bandwidth on dedicated servers, even then it's not unlimited, a better word would be unmetered, and usually you can only get as much bandwidth as the port speed allows, - e.g a 100Mbps port will be able to handle more bandwidth than a 10Mbps port, so if you need lots of bandwidth, the 100Mbps port is a better idea.

There is also the often misconception of people thinking unmeted/unlimited means you get 1TB bandwidth - this is not true on shared/reseller accounts, it's heavy overselling.

Many people would recommend this - stay away from unlimited/unmetered offers on shared/reseller plans.

Re: unlimited bandwidth ?

also look at restrictions as in max file size and file formats allowed. Unlimited can also mean unlimited bandwidth for files smaller dan 5 MB not having mp3 , wma , wav , rar , zip , tar , tar.gz etc extention. when they claim to have it all unlimited there can just be things like that added to the Terms Of Service / rules.
