Load balancing

Hi,
Scenario:
i have say 10 servers and one dispatch server with fault tolerance provided for it.

Then i understand as the number of clients to be serviced by the 10 servers increases the load on the servers increases , the response time increases .

I also know there is hardware load balancing for the same.
If i were to design the laod balance using software what would be my basics input factors , in the sense the dispatch server will in be gateway to the 10 servers and the external world client.

I would be gald if any one of you please provide very good link for the same.

what are the calculation and formula used atleast the basics.

Thanks in advance
Golmal
