my dvd burner is burning slow

Hi everyone, i am new here. My 16x DVD(+/-)R/RW (+/-)R DL LightScribe drive burner is burning cds at a rate of 4x or 5x. My computer is a HP Pavilion a1230n. its specs is 200gb, 1 gb ram, and athlon 2.2ghz processor.
I tried HP online support, and they went through with me on trying to fix the problem. They told me to go to the device manager, and check the cd drives. What i find strange, is a third driver. I dont have a third driver. The driver is called, UU6303C XEN31F SCSI CdRom Device.
Can someone please help me?

Re: my dvd burner is burning slow

I assume you don't have a SCSI drive. However, IIRC, SATA drives are considered SCSI because they are serial-based, not parallel like IDE drives. If your computer has SATA drives installed, or has connections on the motheboard, the drivers may have been loaded into Windows.

BTW, what is the rated burn speed for your DVD? I think the average max speed right now is around 8x. Plus you need to realize that DVD burning is quite a bit faster than CD burning, so a 2x DVD burn should be faster than a 48x CD burn. (I don't recall the actual numbers off hand but they're easy to find if you're interested.)

Now, if I read your post correctly, you're having a problem burning CD's at a fast speed. What are your blank CD's rated at? What program are you using to burn them? Is your burner calibrated correctly? Is your burning program defaults changed to burn at 4x?

Often a burning program will down-speed the burn if it encounters problems to ensure a good burn. You might try doing a burn without using your computer at the same time so the burning process has the entire attention of the computer; see if that makes a difference. You may need a firmware update to your DVD burner, though I doubt it. You might also try looking at the LightScribe website for new drivers or known issues; they may be aware of the problem and have a fix for it.

Re: my dvd burner is burning slow

o ok. The thing is, first of all, my pc is brand new. My pc is a HP pavilion a1230n. I only have been using cd-r to burn MP3s. All I know is that there is nothing wrong with the dbd burner. I believe it is some files or something that is conflicting with my sonic digitalmedia program for burning cds. I believe it was after installing nero that i started having this problem. Even that i uninstalled the program, it still acts slow while its burning a cd. I use memorex cds that haves the rates of 48x. Also, while im burning a cd, when i move the mouse around, it moves slowly. When i look at the front of my pc, i see that the yellow light blinks three times and then it stops. Then, it keeps on constantly. I believe that is what indicates how fast is burning.
Towards adding to my situation, I had this problem before, a couple of months ago. I didnt knew what to do, but reinstall windows. Then, everything started working normal again. This is why i believe that the burner has nothing wrong. Also, i have problems watching movies, or putting a music cd to play on it. But it works fine on putting music cds on my regular cd-rom drive. My computer also camed with a regular cd-rom drive.
The main thing, is that I dont want to reinstall windows again. I want to be able to fix this problem, i feel that there is some files or something that is causing this malfunction on my dvd burner. Also, i feel something strange about the other driver that is listed in my device manager, i feel that it may be a virus or something.

Re: my dvd burner is burning slow

When you're using your burner (both playing and burning), take a look at your system resources. It sounds like your CPU is maxing out when using the drive, which it shouldn't be. Even though your system is new, there may be newer drivers available that can help it out.

Also, take a look at the settings in Device Manager and make sure you have DMA and PIO modes set (I don't recall offhand what the values normally are but they should at least be enabled).

You may also look at your BIOS settings and see if there's anything that can be optimized there; things like burst-mode enabled or whatever. The BIOS help tips should give you the info you need, but you should be sure of what you're doing. There are a few sites around that will tell what nearly every option you may have does and what the best settings are. It may not only fix your DVD problem, but it could speed up your system overall.

Beyond that, you may want mess with the software that's installed, like reinstalling Nero or ensuring it's completely removed, removing Sonic DigitalMedia, etc. If you haven't already, you might see if the HP support forums have people with a similar problem. There may be a specific fix required because it's an HP, rather than the general tips you'll received at GIDForums.

Re: my dvd burner is burning slow

I am running an HP A1600N, with a LITEon 16X Lightscribe burner. I was having the same problems, burning great on day and then the next it slowed down to about 2x burning a 4.5 gig DVD, taking about 45 min to burn a disc. I tried everything. Dump Nero 7, reinstall again and again. Installed Nero 6, same thing. Checked bios settings, everything set for Ultra DMA not PIO.

More reading and reading. Then I came across a comment about updating the Bios for the burner. Went to the LITEon sight got the latest bios flash for my burner. Created a bootable cd with the flash program and the newest bios. Installed the flash and rebooted. WOW what a difference.

Now the buffer stayed at 98 - 99 % and the burner was back to normal burning a DVD in about 8 min. at 8x.

It seems to me that HP computers and LITEon have a bios problem. It might have been the motherboard bios, I had to send it back to get it reflashed after only having it for 2 months, then the burner was having problems, had to flash the bios for it also. Lesson learned, just keep trying and lots of reading. Hope this post helps fix your problems. Good Luck.
