Help - need new music!

A music forum huh? Cool...

I am one of those guys that is alwasy complaining about music these days. I can't seem to find anything new that appeals to me. It seems that everything has gone to rap or pop music -- neither of which I care for too much.

So here is the challenge. I am going to list who I enjoy listening too and anyone that can let me know of some "new" music that may appeal to me.
  • Smashing Pumpkins - Earlier stuff. It was more raw and more energy. As all groups did the pumpkins seemed to go the commercial route. Musically, I really admire Billy Corgan. He has real talent that converts into listenable music.
  • The Doors - I have long been a Jim Morrison fan. The first time I heard the Doors I couldn't stand them. Their music seems to be timeless.
  • Led Zeppelin - More timeless music IMO. I like John Bonham's drumming better than about anyone else that I can think of.
  • Alice in Chains - Hit and miss with AIC. Sometimes they sound too much like an 80's hair band. Also, sometimes there music is too depressing.
  • Pearl Jam - Early stuff only. I can't think of a group that went from amazing to suck faster.
  • The Cure - Really hit and miss with the Cure. I've just recently started listening to them again and there are quite a few songs that are outstanding.
  • Pink Floyd - One of the most interesting bands ever. Most of what they have done I have enjoyed. The early stuff with Syd is a bit over the edge for me though.

Not by any means an inclusive list, but a list of bands that I seem to enjoy over and over.

What does everyone else listen to? I am mostly intrigued by basic rock and some of the close off-spins. I play the drums as well as sing at times in a screw around band. I love a 4-peice set with energy playing listenable music.

My favorite bands, loosely grouped by genre:

*Industrial/electronic/techno: The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, The Crystal Method, KMFDM, Rob Zombie, Covenant, Velvet Acid Christ, Fluke, Rammstein, t.A.T.u., Marilyn Manson, Fatboy Slim, et al.

*80's & 90's New Wave, Rock, Alternative: Depeche Mode, The Cure, Prince, Elton John, Billy Idol, Erasure, Simple Minds, Men at Work, Pet Shop Boys, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Aqua, Talking Heads, Madonna, Book of Love, Love and Rockets, Duran Duran, et al.

*New Age/Relaxation/Classical: Enya, Adiemus, Mozart, Beethover, Bach, Pachebel, Sacred Spirits, the Pure Moods collections

Obviously I have a pretty eclectic taste. I'll listen to just about anything as long as it's not rap/hip-hop and country; however I do like "old school" rap like Beastie Boys and RunDMC and I like the older country stuff, like Johnny Cash and Hank Williams Jr.

For general techno/electronic tunes, there's an iTunes radio station out of Sweden that's pretty good called Playdio.

That is actually pretty good. I listened to some of their tunes on-line. Maybe a bit more of a Depeche Mode sound than the Cure? I could see some of them growing on me, but I could also see that I may not like some of their stuff as with the Cure.

Thanks for the link and info!

Yeah, probably more of the Depeche Mode. Seriously, I worship these guys- they are so awesome in concert, seem genuinely friendly too.

I'm not a music groupie type at all, but seeing these guys perform makes me want to have musician friends.
They are touring in Europe now, but tend to play a lot in NYC (based in Brooklyn I think??). I saw them in Baltimore, so it was dirt cheap at the venue compared to those in my neck of Northern Virginia. Had actually missed them at HFS the previous spring bc someone in the group made us late.

Re: Help - need new music!

Hello there,

Stumbled on your "New music wanted" in a google search, (was that dead or alive by the way ).

Anyway, mentioning Pink Floyd, you might want to follow what we are working on, as it is a new music, with symphonic dimensions and a lot of drive.

Its all brand new, only a few months, so the samples are not mastered yet however they allready works pretty okay.

Its a fusion of things like: jazz / pop / heavy metal / minimalism / cinema soundtracks and other stuff

You can check it out here: www.myspace.com
(hmm, appears not to allow links, anyway its on myspace slash micknye , hope thats okay )

And its alive

Enjoy!
