Hi, I have a different recorder, a Samsung SW 204B, which I bought 3 years ago and is only capable of doing 4-speed recording at max. I have been using Nero 5 for more than 2 years and never experienced these calabration problems, until a couple of days ago. Same CD-R from a spindle of 50 pieces, same recorder, same SW package, so I feel that the lens-dirty comment of some of the guys would be the best guess for the cause of my problem. I mostly fails at the very beginning (1%) and I am mostly able of restarting the process, then it seems to succeed!?! I have no idea what causes this, but indeed cleaning it might not be a bad idea. My 2 cents, Addy. |

i get the same errors too after doing an update of nero's software. heres the funny thing.. i use the roxio software built into windows xp and i can burn at will. its the nero software obviously. before the update.. everything was ok.. after the update nero doesnt work, but roxio still works fine even with the crappy cheap media i was using before. always test a theory out for yourself. dont take anyone elses answer without first consulting yourself.

hardware isnt the problem.. software is where almost all the problems crop up. think about it.. i updated and only now do i have problems. i would try some other burner software and see if that fixes the problem over buying a new cdrom. software is full of bugs.. and prone to fail unless tested over and over and over again. maybe nero didnt bother to test it on an xp machine or something and thats why we have all these problems. maybe they didnt have the same windows updates as we do.. who knows. all i know is roxio sftware in windows xp does just fine and doesnt throw any errors so maybe roxio is the way to go.

CreativeHey guys, im sorry to bring the news but, My CD-RW Burner is a "Creative" and i JUSt started getting this error since i upgraded to Nero 6. THis is the situation ok.
It started 1 week ago. THe first time, i figured it was a power malfunciotn, so i turned my PC off,, unplugged the power cord to the burner,, and re-plugged it snugly. Then it worked. Now , that method isn't working. I get this error on both my PC's (both AMD Athlon XP's, and Running WIndows XP) Ive been burning with nero while running windows XP for a very long time. its not windows XP i know that for a FACT. Now, since u all thought it might of been the newer version of Nero 6, its NOT. i just installed 5.5.4.0 (which ALWAYS WORKED) and now i get that god damn error there too!!! So, what im gonan do now, is clean out the drive as much as possible, before i get my new burner. (Its an MSI. By the way, if you have any comments about MSI burners,, please let me know, it would be much appreciated!!) ANyways,i hope this works. It isn't the quality of CD"s because i always burned using LOW-grade CD's. (cheap ones) So.... its gotta be the hardware. Im gonna try easy CD creator, (just because i never have) to test my luck. Ill let ya's know if that fixes it!!! Peace till then - Kevin |

i have the same problemone day out of nowhere it just quit working when i went to burn a cd...same power calibration error at around 1% of burning. I have a old 4x4x24 HP CD Writer Plus 8200 and it worked fine until a couple weeks ago. I've been using brand new Memorex and verbatium cdr's for as long as i can remember...i've used nero 5 and up, and fireburner and neither work..i doubt blowing some air in the drive is going to do it either..this isn't like fixing the red screen error with the old 8bit nintendo games..whatever it is, it looks like everyone has the same deal and i don't think its software nor hardware after seeing it affecting so many people..i bet that blaster virus did something to jack it up..my comp wasn't updated and i got resricted to all kinds of settings inside win2k but i can't remember if the burner worked before or after that wave of trojans that came out..

still not workingI took apart the cd drive, air blasted the inside and had it sparkling clean. Using top quality cdr's and I get the same error. I know the drive didn't just magically crap out either. Also updated the ASPI drivers.

I'm having the same problem. I had it once before and just changed my power cables around in the tower and voila, it all worked. However, it happened again and now it sucks. Help me out here. -Tru

"POWER CALIBRATION ERROR""Power calibration" - When burning a CD the drive tries to write a test signal to the disk to set the calibration of the laser. If it cannot write a readable signal, this is called a "power calibration error". The error message usually means that there is something wrong with the media. After much trial and error, I determined that the none of my 48x media (100pc no-name spindle) worked with my Lite-On burner but 40x media from Verbatim, Sony, and Maxell did work. TKD media did not work at any speed on my system. Hope this helps.

What about space on your Hard Disk Drive? Here's a thought; this is all I can share since I have never experienced this particular problem myself (Thank GOD!)...
What if this problem has something to do with something totally unrelated to the drive itself; like RAM or (severe lack of) free space on your main Hard Disk Drive?. The only thing that changes besides normal wear and tear of parts is the growing data in your HDD...; so it could be related!? __________________
