problems enablin drives on windows xp pro

i have

windows xp pro
52x24x52x burner and so on

but the problem is that i got a dvd rom and i put it into the second slot and plugged in all the wires but when i turned the comp on it didnt recognize my dvd rom. it only recognized my cd burner i took out the dvd rom and put in a cd rom and it still didnt recognize it so i switched the cd rom to master and the cd burner to slave and then it didint recognize my cd burner. my computer only keeps on recognizin one drive the master one. so i go to my computer then local disk and hardware and click on the samsung dvd rom and properties i saw that the device was disabled so i clicked the button to enable the device and then a message came up "windows was not able to enable this device"

on device status it said

device is disabled (code 22)???????????

wtf is that all about man ma comp sux

It sounds like a hardware problem.

First, has your system got a lot of other bits of hardware in it? Code 22 disabled usually results from a lack of IRQs (interrupt requests), then Windows cannot work with it.

Have a good look in the Device Manager, go to View->Resources by type, and see if there's any spare IRQs. It won't let you change stuff tho.

You've one EIDE hard disk right? It's good to have the DVD on the same slot as the HD, and then the CD-RW on it's own. Ensure the master/slave stuff is set up right.

Could try the DVD's manufacturers website for any install XP stuff.

Got the same problem, tried searching around for info and found this.

Heres my setup, windows xp pro

master1 : dvd drive
slave1 : cd rw (samsung sw-408B)

master2 : main hd
slave2 : old storage hd

All was working fine, now for some reason the cd rw (samsung sw-408B) no longer works. In device manager it is shown as disabled and if i try and enable it: 'windows was not able to enable this device' nor will it let me install drivers for a cd rw.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for your time

Hood is on a distinguished road
i have a very simple sollution, ditch windows xp because it is rubish. and go back to using a good old stable OS like win 2k or win 98!! then when the next version of windows comes out, ie win 2004 or win 2005 then wait for them to be out for a year, then upgrade to them (think its named longhorn) after a year some bugs wil have been fixed and u wil b left with stable OS, unlike win xp - which is in all honesty absolutely rubbish - it allows no user customisations, sets everything up for u, doesnt give u control and doesnt have support of al hardware!

Start by making sure all the jumpers are set correctly. It may be both drives are set for master which would be the default. After that, make sure you have current drivers for your IDE controller. It could be a problem with that driver that causes your problem. I found on my system that default WinXP IDE driver worked best, but usually the manufacturer driver is better. Also, after checking all of this try deleting the device from device manager and reboot. I find most times this works. You may find a bug similar to one I found where the drive won't work right unless there is a disc in thr drive when the system boots. If this is the case keep a couple discs in the drives when not in use and all may be happy. Good luck with your problem.
