Welcome to the forum Falcon16.

Its impossible not to spend a fortune if your constantly striving for top end computers. However, I made my gf a computer for £125, which is about $250 candadian and its not a bad spec.

As for motherboard companies, it depends what processor your going to be after. I still love the AMD althon xp as its never ever given me any problems. Abit are the overclocking specialists and Soltek do a pretty good one as well although I'm a bit behind the times now.

Aopen are supposed to be pretty good although I've never tried them, although probably the best and well known is Gigabyte. Have a look at the Gigabyte GA-7NNXP for example.

Well, I can't say I liked them before, but thanks to this: www.lanparty.com.tw I can proudly say DFI is now my favorite.
