It sounds to me like you've got programing experience. So in this case, I'd suggest you download a copy of the www.php.net manual.

Next, try some of these sites (in order of difficulty):
  • www.phpb.com - Beginners PHP.
  • www.desilva.biz - Tips & Tricks.
  • www.phpbuilder.com - Good Articles.
  • www.sitepoint.com - More articles.
  • www.zend.com - Pros.

And of course you've these forums, if ever you need a hand!

If you REALLY want to learn PHP / MySQL

Hi ckone,

Everyone has their preference on how they plan to go about learning something new but here's what I did and still do to a certain extend (with regards to learning PHP/MySQL).
  • I just needed one book on the subject; fortunately for me I got myself quite a useful one. I still refer to it nowadays, though not so frequent.
  • Download all 3 manuals from the respective sites, i.e. Apache, PHP and MySQL. Priceless tip!
  • Register, lurk and post at as many PHP/MySQL forums as you can find. The trick though is to find ones that are NOT always sending newbies to the PHP Manual at php.net (I can't stand that!). Visit these forums daily or as frequently as you can. They are a steady stream of snippets, information and ideas. Much better than any article/tutorial site.
  • Bookmark a few must refer-to PHP sites listed at zend.com and PHP.net. PHP sites usually update articles much less frequently so you just visit them once a fortnight or monthly.
  • Experiment, disect PHP scripts that can be downloaded off sites like HotScripts.com and the like.
  • Finally, start small, trying to figure out how to build a PHP forum for example, is going to frustrate you very quickly and you might find yourself losing interest in learning PHP just as fast after that.
  • [edit]I was going to say 'set up a webserver', right at the top of this list, but since you're already into Linux, I think you're already past that [/edit]
