Is my windows installation doomed?Ok, so I have made a pretty stupid mistake and I fear that there is no other alternative then a re-installment of windows but I want to be 100% first so I'll tell you my problem and if there is no solution then I will reinstall windows.
Anyway, here it is: Last night I came up with the idea of doing a little maintence on my computer. You know, defrag(I just norton systemworks, speed disc), cleaning up unnecesery files, full computer scans etc. I use the very usefull software called EasyCleaner. Now for those who doesn't know what this is it's a very usefull software(duh!) which has options like "Scan your computer for temp files and delete them" and "Search for duplicates and delete them" to free up some space on your HD. Here is where I did the extremly stupid mistake: I did the "duplicate scan" on my C: drive...well lets just say it found alot of duplicates. However no dammage was done yet as EasyCleaner Scans first and then let you decide what to remove. In my situation it would have been better if EasyCleaner decicded for you becouse I selected EVERYTHING(500mb of duplicates on the C: drive) and clicked "Delete". A little explenation: In the "Duplicate scan" it searches for files which are the same size and contains the same thing, even if they don't have the same name or are in diffrent folders. Anyway, EasyCleaner started deleting the selected items and pretty soon I got a pop-up saying something like a file in Service pack 2 has been exchanged with an unknown file. I clicked cancel and the pop up came up again. I did this about 5-6 times when I relised maybe I should stop deleting files with EasyCleaner and look up what the problem is. (I did noticed that EasyCleaner found some duplicates in folders like c:\windows\system32 but I figured they were just files left there by some other software) Ctrl-alt-del and exit EC. Cancel on the latest pop-up but it didn't not reappear now. Oh well, I'll just use the Win doctor in Systemworks. Let's skip a few mins ahead(during which I continued with the maintence of my computer) to the time where I was going to check the windows update... Nothin... And then I don't mean no updates, I mean it couldn't even connect, the explorer window was empty... About now I'm starting to realise what I might have done... Smart as I am I remeberd that the comp had been on all night doin several scans of all sorts so ok, maybe I should try and reboot the comp. If you aren't already laughing your pants off then this is where the fun begins. Getting the normal modercard screen at bootup...doin some IDE check...and then...What the? NO WINDOWS! Instead I get the pleasent message saying something like: Cannot start windows. Missing file: system32\ntoskrnl.exe Okidoki, I now know that I shouldn't have done the duplicate scan on the C: drive so off I am to my dads computer(From which I am posting) to search for "ntoskrnl.exe" on google. I find the solution on one of the very helpfull sites. Hurray! Back to my sick computer and in with the windows CD. Selecting Boot from CD. Then the "Hit R to repair windows" or something like that and then follow the steps on the solution. When I'm done I restart my computer(duh!). Mothercard bootup screen... Bios check... What the? A new message! This time it sais something like: Missing or corrupt NTFS.sys file. Use windows CD to repair. I'm not 100% but I'm pretty sure NTFS is pretty important for something...So back to google. Also, by now I'm starting to realise there might be a few of these missing files but the first one was fixed in just a min so it can't take too long. Finding 2 diffrent solutions...one on this bord...one on microsofts website. The one on the bord was shorter and seemed easier, very similair to the ntoskrnl.exe-one. Did what it said I should do and restarted my computer... Mothbord thingy...done Bios check...done but this time there was no message...there was nothing... There was a blackscreen with an underscore " _ " blinking in the top left corner... Oh jolly good! In with the win cd and do the microsoft solution which contained 2 name changes on files, one of them being the ntoskrnl.exe file, one being another file with nt in the begining. *"Wrong answer"-music from tv shows* One of the files is missing... It must have been one of the files removed in the duplicate scan I couldn't continue with the microsoft solution... That's about it, that's where I am now. Just so you know I understand my stupid mistake and didn't really think it trough untill it was to late... So, what to do? Uninstall and reinstall windows? By the way, after this I will begin doing backups... |

Re: Is my windows installation doomed? You might be able to boot off the CD and just reinstall Windows. I used to do it in my tech support days; it doesn't always work but if a customer screwed up their computer and some files are corrupt or missing, doing an install over itself sometimes fixed the problem.
You might also try the Recovery Console off the CD. I think you said you already tried that but there are several options when using it, so I'd recommend trying them all. If that doesn't work, then your best bet is probably to reformat and reinstall. Chances are good that you really screwed up the computer. __________________
