Java - Just starting

ok so i'm thinking about taking ap comp sci at my school next year which teaches java

i wanna get a headstart over the summer but don't know where to start from lol

what program do people use to make java apps?
i see that theres the normal jdk 5.0 but theres also a netbeans ide, but i doubt the teacher will allow us to use the ide - so i guess i only need the jdk 5.0?

also, what's a good text editor for java? i'm basically looking for a good text editor that just has the lines numbered and code organized ... i like everything else about notepad doesn't have.

Re: Java - Just starting

Well, if you want to go ahead and start learning Java (which is a great idea) you can either buy a book on it or take a look at some online tutorials. I would recommend the online tutorials for now because you will end up forking out the big bucks for your text book (so there's no reason to have 2 Intro Java books). If you know what textbook you'll be using, go ahead and buy it. Else, check out these tutorials and then practice, practice, practice... http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutor...l#nutsandbolts

As for the editor, there are so many out there. A free editor that I used back when I was in school was jGrasp (http://www.jgrasp.com). It's free and has all of the functionality that you are looking for. You could also try jEdit or j (those are 2 different editors)... or one of Micro$oft's products.

Have fun, and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.
