Question

Computer programmer apprenticship

I was at the USMAP (the Military Apprenticeship Program) and saw that they have an apprenticeship for Computer Programmer. I enrolled since it will only take me a year to get the necessary hours for the certificate, due to prior experience.

My question is, has anyone ever heard of a programming apprenticeship? I've never heard of anyone having an apprentice certificate before, and wasn't even aware that one was available.

I'm getting one simply because I can, and it's something else to put on my resume. But does anyone see a more valid reason to have it? Is it one of those things that exists but no one bothers to get? Does anyone else have one or know someone who does? Would it mean anything to employers to have one?

Just curious. Thanks.

Re: Computer programmer apprenticship

For a computer technician, I believe certificates are available, and specialty programming areas like Cisco, MFC (maybe) and other proprietary systems, but for programming in general I don't know of a certificate.

Re: Computer programmer apprenticship

Yeah, I know of language specific certs like Java and .NET, but I've never heard of an appreticeship cert.

It's weird to think that programmers can be thought of as carpenters or mechanics, where you can work w/ a "Master programmer" for two years and then you're a Journeyman programmer. Kinda funny sounding.
