how to block the popup adverts / destroyads on msn messenger for free

It probably doesn't surprise you that people sell programs for something that takes a minute to fix just because Microsoft left the port open since NT came out.

There's a lovely how to here: http://www.updatexp.com/destroyads.html on how to remove the problem and a little background about it all. In the interests of assurance, I'll just quote the instructions in case we ever lose it since it wasn't the easiest thing to find.

For Windows XP and 2000
Quote:
Instructions:
Go to the START menu, Select Run and type in services.msc and click OK.

Now a new window will appear with lots of "services" on the right hand side...

Scroll down and find the Messenger service, select it, right click it and choose properties.

Under Startup Type select Disabled

Then click the Stop button.

Then click the Apply button.

Then click the OK button.

Messenger Service Spam can no longer be received on your machine....

Windows ME / Windows 98?

I haven't used MSN Messenger for so long now, so I actually missed this 'pop-up' issue entirely. Does it also happen on these OS' or is this just an XP/2000 issue?
