The original pun (playing with the word "Multics") was OK, but I think the reason the name "Unix" really caught on among the original insiders was the added feature of its being a play on the word "eunich". I kind of wish that I could have been there.

According to Multics historian, 1960's MIT denizen and man on the spot, Tom Van Vleck http://www.multicians.org/unix.html:

We even knew that it had a joke name, Unix, coined by Brian Kernighan,
that was a reference to Multics. ("One of whatever Multics was many of"
or "Multics without balls.")

(When I finish my Time Machine project, I'm considering returning to the wondrous 60's. For computer history, of course, not the free love or the pharmaceuticals.)

Regards,

Dave
