blindly installed apache web for xp

How can I tell that the server is working? I also do not know where to drop the folders to host my site. I have loads of questions, if someone could get with me. Thanks nephrurus

Re: blindly installed apache web for xp

If you have loaded (started) the Apache Web Server & set up the httpd.conf correctly, fire up your favourite browser and go to http://127.0.0.1/. You should see a web page from Apache, informing you that everything is OK.

Where you place your documents is up to you, especially if you have this set up just for development purposes and your web server is not accessible from the outside (except from your PC).

If you have specific issues, please do not hesitate to ask...

There's usually a default area Apache looks for web files. On Linux it's usually in something like /var/www. XP will probably have something similar; look for a www directory.

That being said, you can put the files anywhere you like, just as long as you change the Apache config file to point to your files.

I looked at the 127.0.0.1. it says that Apache was installed correctly. In the lower right corner of the toolbar it says " running all apache services". I do not understand how to re config.....httpd config? Where do I place my Dreamweaver files to run the site on the server? Is it in the www folder? I am really thankful for any help. I have been trying to host my site for over a month. I have another box with linux, that I am trying to install a new pci card. I am running into problem after problem. Thanks Greg
