dell inspiron 6000 graphics card

hello i'm looking to buy a dell inspiron 6000, mainly for graphics programming, and they have this option of buying ATI x300 graphics card, but it only supports ps 2.0 and I want to buy the laptop with just integrated graphics in hopes that I can maybe put a nvidia 6600 in there or x800. Is it possible to do so in laptops? I just want a laptop with a graphics card that supports pixelshader 3.0.

Unless the laptop has a mini-PCI slot for video cards, you can't change the video. Have you considered the Apple Powerbook? It uses the ATI Mobility 9700, but I don't know which version of PS it supports.

Re: dell inspiron 6000 graphics card

Could you use OpenGL? I ask because some cards may support it better.

Generally speaking, unless you are willing to spend the $$ for a purpose-built graphics laptop, you don't have as much power from laptop video chips.

Mainstream systems normally use integrated video chips (which aren't upgradable) and are usually a generation or two behind desktop video. The main focus is on power savings and 2d performance.

You might look at Alienware though; since they are not considered mainstream, they may have a better graphics chip.
