Hello friends,

Me and my friends have decided to create a new site called:
"www.auforums.com".(Anna University forums).
We are planning to create a new forum in the site for our university students.

Since we have no experience in this, someone please guide us in creating a new site and then a forum on that site.
On the top of all, i dont even know how to create a site like that.
I plan to do this in my semester holidays.
How much does it cost for a year?

The domain (auforums) is not available!

If you use a forum script that's free, the only cost you have to bear is the cost of hosting & domain renewal every year (and advertising cost, if any).

I have created a new Forum Anna University forums(with great difficulty.)
This is just a temporary site because of free hosting.

I have just created a phpBB forum and a simple main page.
Here is the link:www.????????.net
(Dont be fooled by the false name. i havent actually created a domain like that. )

I installed the phpBB forum using the CPanel fantastico.
But i didnt get all the administrative options that i see in phpbbforfree hosting site.
Any suggestions?
Should i install manually rather than using CPanel?

and I dont know how to change the forum look, like inserting my own logo, editing the look, changing pictures etc.
i.e editing the php files.
Please help me in this.

First things first; I edited the domain name in your previous post. On the Net, if you didn't register it already, don't flaunt it. There's always someone who is willing to register the domain name just to hold it for ransom or simply to piss you off.

Like what? I mean, what are the missing options? It may be that the people who run phpbbforfree have custom administrative options written into their version of their script.


Back when GIDForums™ was powered by phpBB, cPanel didn't include many add-on scripts and phpBB was definitely not on the list then. I installed it manually...

However, if you ask me now, I would suggest you use the add-on (to install), even though I have no experience to know what the difference is. My logic is that I have not come across problems being discussed on popular webmaster forums related to installing the board via the control panel, so it must work just as well.

About the logo:

Just create your logo; save it filenamed as logo_phpBB.gif and upload it to the /forums/templates/subSilver/images/ folder, writing over the file that already exists. That's the easiest way...

Editing files: you can use any text editor, even the one you use to write your programmes (I think) and upload the changed file to your remote server. You need an FTP client like FileZilla, which is what I use nowadays.

I never knew such things would happen.

Regarding the extra options, i found what they are.
They are the mods(modifications) in phpBB, where we can add extra options, etc..

I'll update this thread when i make modifications in the site.

My site AU Forums got the first rank in the Google Search!!!

When i typed Anna university forum in google, the first two ranks were my website!!!!!

I am very much happy.
Work is still going on in the site.

I have a question.
Instead of the boring phpBB smileys, can i use Yahoo smileys or MSN smileys?
Will it cause some copyright problems or is it illegal?

If you read their terms of use, I am sure it says that you are not allowed to do that. You could always write to them and ask, if you really want to.


Wait till Google finds this thread. Hahaha...

Seriously, Google will return your site for the phrase because there is very little else with those words put together like that.

If on the other hand, you named your forum "web designing forum", you won't see it so high on Google results because it's quite a competitive term.
