Cheap forumsI'm looking for a "free" forum site to start a forum/bulletin board. Preferably with a threaded message view if possible.
Any recommendations? Thanks __________________

Well, I googled too. I was looking for personal recommendations, not simply a list. That I can find by myself... __________________

Suggested Forum Scripts (Free)I started this site with phpBB. It's as good as vbulletin until about (vbulletin's version 3+).
Threaded views? I believe Phorum used to feature threaded views. There is a (local car) site I visit sometimes and they are using SMF, which does a fine job I think. Paramesh, posting links (when it was not requested) and especially links to search engine result pages is something I discourage on this site. We're all here to discuss, and most people were already using a search engine when they found this site |

Re: Cheap forumsHey Walt, how simple (or complex) are your needs? While I was lamed up I had time for lots of search engine fishing and reading. One of the things I was looking into was a simple, configurable, php driven package. I believe one I found that looked promising was from bblog.com. In their forums there is a thread that has some member signature links to sites using the software.
Perhaps it would be of interest for you. I haven't given it a run yet to see if it will work in a stripped down simple way for my site. It does look promising though. HTH, Mark EDIT: You know Walt, after re-reading your post I don't think my suggestion was what you were after. __________________

Re: Cheap forumsBasically, all I want is a place that I can set-up a forum (a la ProBoards or FreeForum) that includes a threaded view for participants, not just a chronological list. The ZTree Forum is an excellent example. By the way, I highly HIGHLY recommend to any power user out there ZTree as a replacement for the mostly useless Windows Explorer/My Computer functions. This sucker is fast, small, intuititve, and keyboard driven for user speed.

Re: Cheap forumsIt seems like my subtle attempt to talk you out of looking for hosted solution didn't work!
Looking for one with threaded views is tough. All I have seen are the ones listed in the free hosting forum and they are all mostly powered by phpBB -- at least the recent ones. A quick search yielded http://server.com/communityapps/discussionapp/ which comes close to what you're looking for but it's not free. Now I have to ask: "Why Remotely Hosted?" |

Looks like http://worldcrossing.com/ might be what I'm looking for. At least so far. __________________
