Processor Overclocking query...

Hello, im keen to alter my computers performance but ive overclocked it like this:

fsb 100mhz * multiplier 13 = 1300mhz

to

fsb 114mhz * multiplier 13 = 1482mhz

i have had this overclocked for a while now, its perfectly stable at 114mhz but every time i go a step further to 116mhz fsb it crashes at startup or when i play media player.

Does anyone know how i can continue overclocking?

Thanks, Ant...

ps. This doesnt have anything to do with the last post...

Re: Processor Overclocking query...

You probably can't take it much further; normally the system is "smart" enough to tell you when it can't take any more. That being said, there's normally two ways to overclock: bump up the FSB or change the multiplier setting.

Changing the FSB has the most drastic effect on your entire system since it's changing the actual bus speed. This can affect everything related to the bus, like memory, cards, etc., not just your CPU. This is probably why your system pukes when you move it past 114; the overall system can't handle the higher speed.

The other thing to do is change the multiplier. This has the benefit of only affecting the CPU so you can leave your FSB at a stable setting and mess w/ the processor only. However, many chips nowadays have a locked multiplier so you might want to check out www.anandtech.com or www.tomshardwareguide.com to see what the specifics of your processor are. If you can change the multiplier, then you'll probably be able to make the change in your BIOS. Otherwise you'll have to move jumpers on the mobo or other crazy things. (Some of the older Athlon chips required you to solder traces on the ceramic package to make it overclockable.)

In summary, don't mess w/ your FSB anymore; your system is apparently already at it's limit. See if you can change your multiplier. But don't forget about having adequate cooling for the CPU.

ok, thanks cristalattice,
ill stop changing fsb now, in bios i cant change the multiplier. Is there any way of getting round that or cant i change the multiplier at all?

Re: Processor Overclocking query...

It depends on the type of CPU you have. The multiplier may be locked, which means you are either SOL or you might be able to unlock it. Unlocking it is dependent on the type of processor since each version has a different locking scheme.

If you can't change the multiplier in CMOS, it's possible a BIOS update will allow it. Otherwise your mobo might have jumpers or switches that let you change it. However, on most mobo's made in the last few years, all CPU changes are made via CMOS, so if you can't change it there, you'll probably have to consider a new board.

I dont know, ive looked for bios updates but i cant understand it in the jetwy website. I have no idea how to unlock a processor either.

This is my spec:
Jetway V266B
AMD Duron 100 x13

Thanks, Antony

ps. Hows the weather in Howaii?

Re: Processor Overclocking query...

Right now it looks like your CPU is locked. However, the two web sites I listed in my first post have tutorials on how to change it. Here's a few tutorials I found: http://www.overclockers.com/tips145/, http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets...oc.aspx?i=1345, http://www.tomshardware.com/howto/20011112/index.html.

Be aware that going to this extreme for a speed boost is dangerous to your computer. If you don't have the proper cooling system, you can fry your CPU just from turning it on. The other problem is that even though your CPU may be screaming, the rest of your system hasn't been changed, so you really won't see large speed increases except in certain number-crunching applications.

Honestly, if you can afford it, I'd recommend buying a new system, or at least a new motherboard and CPU.
