Surge Protector problem

Hi all I'm neww here not sure if this is the right place for this post. Here it goes, Any help would be greatly apreciated.

So I bought a new computer just a couple of days ago, I think I may have expreience some kind of voltage surge. I hooked everything up, I plugged a surge protector power cord into the socket, I than plugger in the PC and the monitor. Then I turned ont the surge protector.

When I turned on the surge protector the PC power light flashed on quickly and the PC started too turn on and quickly went off. This happend within less than a second. I then started up the computer as normal. Everyting seems to be working fine. However the PC might not sound right. Its making a muffled kind of noise that sounds like its working but messsily(if that makes sense )

BTW this was not the first time I hooked it up. The first time I hooked it up nothing like this happened. I also tried turning the surge protector on and off (witht the PC off of course) and it did not happen again.

Does anyone know if its even possible to have a voltage surge just from turning on the surge protector?

Is there any way to tell for sure if I experienced a voltage surge? Should I take it to where I bought it and have them look at it?

Any help would be greatly apreciated.

I dont know in detail about this.

But i'll just give you an Idea.
Buy a UPS. It will protect your computer from voltage fluctuations.

This is not a problem. I think the computer just checks whether it is in the shutdown state. If you hibernate, then the computer should automatically start.(What Operating system do you use?)

That voice may come due to many things:
You may have a CD in your CD Drive. The computer will start reading the drive to check whether you can boot from it or not.
Your SMPS fan is running. It may give some noise.
Your components may be loosely connected. So it may vibrate when working.

If you really think the sound is abnormal, you can ask the people from whom you bought the computer.

Thats not possible. How can a surge protector create a surge???

Your room lights may become brighter than normal if a voltage surge occurs.

These are just some possibilities.

Since you have just bought your computer, you can also buy one UPS.(only my thought)

Regards,
Paramesh.

Re: help please

Funny noises (e.g. grinding) are usually indicative of a soon-to-be hard drive failure.

If you want to check for damage yourself, then get a burn-in program and test your system. The program will extensively test your systems components and let you know if there's any problems, e.g. bad memory, HD issues, etc. Then you'll know if you broke your system.

You'll probably also want to take notice of how it acts for the next week or so. If it locks up, BSODs, or crashes unexpectedly, then you might have a problem.

In the future I'd recommend plugging in your computer to the surge strip while both are off. Then turn on the strip followed by the computer. Best way to ensure bad things don't happen.

Re: Surge Protector problem

Tim,

Does your surge protector have a light or other "indication" that shows a wiring fault?

Re: Surge Protector problem

I had my buddy whos very good with computers over last night and he told me the sound was normal and I was being paranoid. lol So I'm not too worried now. I'll just monitor it for the next couple weeks and see what happens. Everthing ins running well now as far as I can tell.........

"If you want to check for damage yourself, then get a burn-in program and test your system. "

where would I get a "burn in program" download or buy one? any recomendation on a good one.

No the surge protector does not show any kind of fault.

Also I did plug the PC into the protector before anything was turned on. It was when I turned on the protector that the PC power light flashed.

Thanks everyone for the replies , they've been very helpful.

PC-Doctor is a good one or you can search online, but I'm sure you can find a shareware app from www.tucows.com.
