Question

Help

Hi guys, I have a major problem? I have an IMB laptop that has been running XP for years now. Out of nowhere I get the missing ntsf.sys file. I don't think its the memory. I just updated to XP service pack 2, and think it is because of the update. But the weird thing is that I can't even boot from the CD drive!!! I can normally get to the repair console and fix problems like this. But here I am stuck. Any suggestions? I did take out one of the two 128 rams. I have even switched them back and forth, still nothing. I need my laptop!!! :-(

hmmm.. similar to my problem!

Hey buddy..

Your problem is a lot identical to the problem that I was having.. and as you woulda already read, I had a new hardware (external modem) plugged in which was stopping the system from booting. Do you have any new hardware that you have plugged in of late? Think...

Thumbs up

Nope No New Hardware.

Okay guys this is a wierd one. I got the machine to work again. As I said before I was not able to boot off the CD so I booted of the 6 XP Setup Disk. This did the trick, after several tries the CD started working again. I guess the System32/drivers folder was really corrupt. I then proceeded to Repair my previous installation of Windows. The really sucky part about the whole thing was that I had to use the original XP CD. This meant that I had to do all the Windows updates all over which took hours! But everything is working fine. I have just finish re-updating XP's SP2. Oh, there is a little bug... my wireless card isn't working!!! This is a card that I have used for years now, very wierd. TUSHAX, thanks for the reply... the only thing new the system was the XP SP2 update... I am just too poor to have new hardware...

I have been having the system32\drivers\ntfs.sys problem here lately. About a year ago I had to have my motherboard replaced. And I keep getting told by Microsoft that the reason for my errors is that I have a conflict with some hardware. So could that mean that I might hafta change my motherboard again? How exactly would I know if the motherboard is bad and needs replaced? This computer is driving me crayz and I am about to throw it in the damn dumpster. So to save me from buying another computer I would appreciate it if someone could help me out. Thanks!!!

Try changing the position of the ram in different slots.
If that dosnt work bring it back.
Are you sure you have the right type of ram.

n.b. Sorry, this was in response to the bottom of page 1.

Well.... As I already mentioned, Make sure to look at the capacitors to make sure none have popped out and that they haven't got any small burn marks where they tie into the motherboard. The only true way to know if you have a hardware conflict like Microsoft says is to remove any hardware from your PC that isn't needed (everything except RAM, Video and CPU and HD.). Also make sure to disable anything that's integrated part of your PC that you aren't using. For example.. If you use a AGP Video card, make sure that your onboard Video is disabled in the BIOS. etc etc etc. Then turn your PC on to see if it boots up ok. If it does, add one piece of hardware at a time until it doesn't boot up anymore. There's your conflict! If you find a conflict make sure to try a different PCI slot and then try again and see if the conflict is still there. There are so many other things to try but this might get ya started.

so I'd like to introduce myself to this thread.
y0 I'm OhYo!

I have joined the club of this moron problem. I've got a
AMD athlon xp 2600 mobile
a7n8x-e deluxe motherboard
nVidia 256 geforceFX 5500 (got 128 FX 5700 in the mail)
512 ddr ram
maxtor 60 gig hdd
cd burner
whatelse whathaveyou.

I was overclockin' it one day and it didn't start up.
Then I turn it on again and it says it wants some random ntfs.sys file. I reformat and reinstall a bunch of times to no avail. So I google this problem up and find this thread. Then i pop in my XP cd and get to the promt and copy the sys file into my folder. reboot... windows loading screen displays and after those little green loading squares slide by twice it shows a blue screen... ...then it shows the infamous Blue screen of death. Now everytime I reboot, it says 'press "r" on next reboot'

So now i can get to the prompt. it said "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt" \windows\system32\config\system

type 'r' to repair"

should i just copy that whole folder from the cd?

I think I'm at a point where i can accually be helped!

well I'm so glad I'm part of this club now.
I feel like... part of the fambley

Hey OhYo, welcome to the family!
It's strange that you've reinstalled and it's still not booting. You've tried repairing, yeah?

I'd give copying the whole folder a shot. You've not much to loose really.

Overclocking didn't do any damage to your system? Would memory be damaged if you clock too high?

turns out all the files i need for that folder are all jumbled up in that i386 folder on the CD. So I'm prolly not going to do that.

I prolly wouldn't as I have a 'mobile' pr0z.
It shouldn't have cause I overclocked to a place that i all ready tested as stable. It was some multiple that got me to like 2500MHZ or perhaps a little lower, but it was the largest jump I've ever made. I went from 2400ish to 2500ish (which is the largest jump of 100). So After I played some Unreal Tournament 2004 It died on me and did this.

As of now went to repair mode and used their 'format' command with the /fs:ntfs argument.

it's almost done and I'll tell you if XP installs and runs ok.

else I've been thinking of takin' it back to Best Buy and ask for a new one.

I've done it before; they should just give me a new one.

(that's what I want, but I don't know if that's in the warrenty)

all righty - i'll tell you if it w0rx.
