Re: "Missing or Corrupt Ntfs.sys" Error Message When You Restart Windows XP After You

I think the only person in this thread that even mentioned this is Acester25, he seemed to have no luck with it... however, we might as well insert it in here somewhere so others may try this before they try anything else.

"Missing or Corrupt Ntfs.sys" Error Message When You Restart Windows XP After You Convert Your Hard Disk to the NTFS File System

RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, you must replace the missing or corrupted Ntfs.sys file. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Start your computer with the Windows XP CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive.

2. You are prompted with the following option:

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R
When you are prompted with this option, press R to select it.

3. At the command prompt, type the following commands (press ENTER after each command):
cd \windows\system32\drivers
ren ntfs.sys ntfs.old

Note This step renames the corrupted Ntfs.sys file to Ntfs.old. If the Ntfs.sys file is not found, then the file was missing.

4. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
copy cd:\i386\ntfs.sys drive:\windows\system32\drivers

Where cd is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive that contains the Windows XP CD, and drive is the drive that you installed Windows XP to.

5. Remove the Windows XP CD from your CD-ROM drive, type quit, and then press ENTER to quit the Recovery Console.

6. Restart Windows XP

If this works for anyone else reading this thread it will be helpful for you to say so here so others can learn from your experience.

But the problem now is that i can't even get to the stage where Windows asks you to repair your syster. On loading the kernels, it says setupdd.sys is missing Error code 7. Any answer to that? Pls!

Hmmm, if you cannot even load the recovery console, it must be a hardware conflict. At this stage, I'd try removing all but the essential bits of hardware, and seeing if you can boot then. Test each memory module individually (if you can), dodgy memory can do anything!

Here's M$ view on the subject

I finally found the problem, it was a dodgy memory. The memory doesn't show any sign of failure at bootup but after i have installed Windows, it starts goiong dodgy. Thanks for the advice.

Missing NTFS File

I've got a little weird problem here. I got this error message saying missing ntfs file after adding ram and it couldn't boot to windows. I've got 4 slots of ram and currently i'm using 3 slots that is 128mb, 128mb and 128mb makes it a total of 384mb ram. Then i added a 256mb into the last free slot but it detected a total of 512mb ram only. Aren't it supposed to be 640mb? 384mb + 256mb = 640mb. My motherboard can support up to 1.5GB ram. If i fix the 256mb ram, it won't boot into windows, came out an error message saying 'missing ntfs file' but if i remove it, everything runs smoothly. Is it something wrong with that ram? Any idea?

ram dodgey

i have encountered this problem twice very recently. and both times it was faulty ram.,,, if i were u i wud remove any new ram immediately so as to prevent any damage to sysmtem files such as the ntfs file.. i had some dodgy ramm form dabs.com, put it in slot one and caused serious boot up problems - ie crashing as soon as pc is on, howvere uses the ram in slot 3 where it is accessed less often and obviously the problem is less likely to occur (it wont use the dodgy bit of ram!),, get ur money back on the new ram or exchange it for different stick,,
hope that helps
mark

ps u wil be able to confirm this if u take out the ram and the problem stops - now u have eliminated the problem, so thru a process of elimination found the source...

Does it boot with just the 256Mb stick installed? Some motherboards don't like different brands or sizes of memory. Have you searched around the net/groups to see if anyone else with your mboard has had such problems? Are all the sticks the exact same type/spec?
Clutching straws..

Yeah it booted with just the new 256mb ram installed but came out the same error message saying 'missing ntfs file'. As long as the 256mb ram is installed, no matter which slot i fix, the error message will pops out. My current brand are those OEM ram, and the new one is from Kingston. My current 3 sticks of 128mb ram have different number of chips too. The 1st stick has 8chips while the 2nd and 3rd ram had 16chips. But everything runs smoothly as long as the new 256mb ram is not installed in. So, i guessed i'll just have to send that ram back and exchange for a new one...
