Well, an extra stick of memory will not go to waste, unless your MB has some kind of limit.

I would buy a stick just to eliminate (bad) memory as the culprit.

Have been considering buy an extra giga of memory since Christmas but keep finding other ways to fritter away my paycheck. Might as well take the plunge now....

I was going to run the fixmbr command but it told me that "this computer appears to have a non-standard or invalid master boot record" and changing this might make my partitions unreadable.

Not entirely sure what this command does so decline it's offer to fixmbr - unsure what it means by partitions, as far as I am aware I have a 200GB IDE drive that is my C drive and a 200GB SATA drive as my D drive and neither are partition into smaller segments.

I opened up my PC case and took out the member and reseated it, in the same slot, this didn't resolve the issue. I only have a 1GB stick of memory so cannot try different sticks.

I have read the entire thread and I see in the majority of cases the memory is to blame. Am I going to have to go down the root of buying a new stick of memory to try?

I ran memtest on my PC results:

Athlon 64 (0.13) 2000MHz
L1 Cache 128K 16392MB/s
L2 cache 512 4072 MB/s
Memory: 1023M 1628MB/s
Chipset VIA KST800 (ECC Disabled)
Settings RAM 200MHZ (DDR400) /CAS 3-3-3-8/DDR-1 (64 bits)

Wall time: 1:44:00
Cached: 1023M
RsvdMem: 156k
Memmap: e820-std
Cache: On
ECC: off
Test: std
Pass: 3
Errors: 0

So going by that test, it doesn't look like a memory issue, looking more like my hard drive has failed or is slowing dying on me.

Re: Missing system32\drivers\ntfs.sys

I managed to get my PC to start, seems like it just needed a wee rest. Am looking at ordering a new HDD, it looks to be at fault.

Re: Missing system32\drivers\ntfs.sys

this worked for me, in reguards to ntfs.sys missing or corrupted.

entered recovery consol
fixmbr and fixboot
chkdsk c:
on reboot selected option to boot normal
as the bar went across the bottom pulled the power plug killing the pc. (if not done might get stuck in a continual reboot till this is done)
pluged back in, power up, starts up normal and the AV is doing a scan now.
seems to be working ok so far.
hope this helps some one else also.

Re: Missing system32\drivers\ntfs.sys

recently ran into the same problem....."Windows cannot start due to missing or corrupt system32\drivers\ntfs.sys file". I had put in an extra pair of lower level sticks of ram trying to boost my sons computer. Removed them and it booted up fine again.

Re: Missing system32\drivers\ntfs.sys

It is not anything to do with your RAM for sure. I had the exact same errors you are having. Don't panic, but do stop trying repair utilities etc. My PC messed up after a failed service pack upgrade then it progressively got worse as I attempted restore utilities, this only made it worse and corrupted my HDD!

In the end some how it partitioned it, not that I asked it to! So after multiple reformats and still the same error message I tried another HDD - with a working Windows 2k installation on it, to no avail... I must admit I think my Windows 2000 version was not 100% legit, so I took it to shop and paid them 20 quid so they would install Windows 2k for me, they had no problems - just typical! I would advise you to stop messing it up any more. Let me no how it goes ...

Re: Missing system32\drivers\ntfs.sys

STOP !!! Take a deep breath and really read ALL the responses. You will see as I did that most of the remedy posts (most anyway) come down to memory issues. I had the ntfs missing error and automatically thought the worst...(human nature and error). Anyway, all that dribble said leads to this (in my case anyway)... It WAS A MEMORY ISSUE. I took out one stick of ram and bada-boom bada-bing windows booted with no issues. SO, it's off to my repair shop to have the the stick of ram tested to which I'm sure is going to be bad and then replace the DDR400 (512MB). Further investigation reveals that the bad memory stick causes the system to not have enough memory to even the read the file structure, thus returning the ntfs.sys file missing error. It's not missing, it just can't be read because of lack of memory. Another user posted he removed a stick of ram and it fixed his issue. That's what got me moving in that direction.
Hope this helps someone.
