Hi,

Here are some tips:

1. Install Windows XP service Packs.
2. Enable Automatic Updates.
3. Don't download programs by companies you are not familiar with. Avoid shareware and freeware.
4. Use Firefox/Opera instead of Netscape/IE. Or Set your browser security to HIGH.
5. Trend Micro™ Anti-Spyware for the Web is free online Spyware removal
6. The Yahoo IE Toolbar uses the Pest Patrol engine and both detects and removes Spyware
7. Use Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool if needed.
8. Use Internet Security software or Internet firewall such as PC-Cillin Internet Security, etc.

You can find more information here...

Cheers,
Paramesh.

Re: windows XP a big problem

Buy a Mac and use Virtual PC.

Seriously, I would add use ZoneLabs Zonealarm for firewall; the built-in MS firewall only blocks incoming traffic, not outgoing. Hence it won't tell you if a spyware program is "phoning home". Also try Ad-aware and Spybot for anti-spyware; you can never have to many since some will catch what others miss.

A big one for worms (but also for some viruses) is: don't use MS Outlook or Outlook Express. Opera has a built-in email program or you can try Thunderbird or Eudora.

Re: windows XP a big problem

Five simple rules (repeating what was already mentioned):
  1. Install Zone Alarm
  2. Install a good Anti Virus program.
  3. Use Thunderbird (or anything that's not a target e.g. Outlook) as your email client.
  4. Don't install anything unless you've searched Google for reviews about it.
  5. Update, update, update...
