[Linux] How to upgrade an rpm with source files?

Sorry if the 'subject' was a bit misleading but I am still figuring out my Linux lingo!

OK, here's what I am confused about. When I loaded RH9, I installed the included PHP 4.2+ rpm package. Last weekend I downloaded the source files for the latest version of PHP i.e. 4.3+.

To install this latest version, do I remove the previous PHP package or do I just install the latest version (hoping that it wouldn't mess up the 'Add / Remove Packages' thingy)?

Allowee has a spectacular aura about
I just compiled PHP without thinking about package management.

but i do think that you need to leave the add / remove for PHP alone.

btw, wait a week and download the official PHP5 beta release

from the php5-dev@lists.php.net list:
Quote:
Ladies and Gents,

After the efforts of the last few weeks, I think we're finally in a good
position to go for a first beta. _The engine is fairly stable, good XML
support is there, and even make test appears to be fairly happy. _I'd like
to aim the beta to come out before the end of the month, so we can finally
get the wheels rolling. _From talking to many of the active developers,
this appears to make sense.

Comments welcome,

Zeev

That's really good news but I want to be comfortable with Linux before I go experimenting with Beta stuff, especially Apache, PHP and MySQL.

I will attempt to just install the 4.3+ version without removing the existing RPM and see what happens...
