Got RedHat 9?I got a copy of Linux RedHat 9 yesterday and I must say that I am really impressed!
If I was struggling with RedHat 7.1, this installation was a breeze! The installation detected even more hardware on my PC with this version, detecting the FireWire and the Sound card as well. Even the scroll mouse works... They even have a 'Add/Remove Program' option now. Plus, you have a nice GUI for nearly everything, even the Apache configuration file! Apache 2, that is! A full install is over 4.5GB (<5GB) but since my partition was just slightly over 2GB I trimmed some packages off the install to fit... this time! Here's the only bad thing, it didn't detect my modem Overall, I think Linux is set to rule the world soon! If that doesn't happen, I'd be really shocked... __________________

Cool. Is it fast? And how buggy is it?
My main problem with Linux is the fact that so much unnecessary stuf is installed by default, like 5GB is a shed-load of space for an OS. Who needs the many difference text editors? Why are there so many different ways of installing stuff (though that's been improved by Add/Remove bit). It always strikes me that Linux is a bodged job of components stuck together, and isn't very well integrated. And it's (KDE or Gnome) slow on an average PC that Windows can fly happily on. X should not be necessary, the GUI should be right on top of the kernel which will make it much faster and less bloat, and a shared programming interface for all applications so that one program on KDE will work in Gnome, WindowMaker or whatever. Wishful thinking though for Open Source GF |

The 4.5GB install is not just the OS, it's all the packages / programs that were available in the Install Disks. I wanted to install them all just to see what they were... but I didn't for the reason mentioned in my post earlier.
Quote:
I didn't say they were perfect but going from 7.1 to 9 (as a Linux newbie) was already impressive, so the potential for this OS to do serious damage to Windows is real and that was my point. Buggy? I wouldn't know... I've just been poking around not really knowing what else to look for since I installed it - not being able to access the Internet kinda took the wind out of it for me |

Sure, I know it isn't perfect, and it's quirks can be fun. But overall my main qualms with Linux were those 2. Even trying to install just the basics takes up nearly 2GB, which annoys me (since I've got a small HD).
It is a pity it didn't recognise your modem, I would've thought they'd put a lot of work into this area, instead of the poor newbie trying to configure PPP or something similarily ghastly. I guess I'm just in a bad mood today GF |

I wonder if they'll release a package for the Alpha.

Yes, Alpha is a cpu architecture - used by Digital/Compaq. I recently gave up on Redhat 7 and wanted to see if they'll bother releasing this new version for the Alpha. Or its Windows NT for my XLT.

Well, now I know what Alpha is....
Back to my 'review' of RH9, I got online finally last night. It was just a matter of pointing to the right 'tty'. I had my modem on COM2 and I forgot that it was there (thinking it was in COM1). So this post is through Mozilla/Linux RH9. Man... I love the default fonts on this version! __________________

Ohhhhhh, I always thought Alpha releases were seriously buggy prereleases of software, before beta versions came out. (it also measn that too, I think)
I'll have to get a look at this new version. Fonts with the build in Anit-aliasing look so pretty GF |
