Re: Music

Ironically I was thinking about asking this question the other day.

My faves are Industrial, Techno, etc. (e.g. KMFDM, Rammstein, Rob Zombie, Covenant) but I also listen to Classical (Mozart, Beethoven, etc.)

I've played with Garageband on my Mac and made a short techno song. It's okay for a first effort but could be better; it does have a catchy little beat that sticks in my daughter's head though.

Re: Music

I am a bit of a music junky myself. I sing in a band although we don't get together very often. I also play the drums. I have an electronic drum set which is really handy for practicing. This year I just bought a Behringer powered mixer which allows me to tweak my sound a bit more.

My favorite bands mostly fall into the grunge catagory. I am not sure of anything that is better than the early Smashing Pumpkins. Throw in some AIC, Nirvana and even Pearl Jam.

I have liked punk and I always enjoy listening to some of the Clash's not so popular stuff.

I grew up in the 80's and mostly listened to Classical Rock. A ton of Zeppelin. I hated the 80's hair bands and still do. Some of the new wave/alternative stuff I really enjoyed and still do: Talking Heads, Modern English, the Cure, etc.

I also have liked the Doors forever. We do a lot of Doors tunes with my band because Jim Morrison has a good vocal range for me.

Green Day - we've done Brainstew (awesome song) and I've been wanting to do She.

Ultimately, music for me comes down to substance and not show. I hate pop music. I like some real intensity behind the music if that makes sense. There is something about unbridled anger and passion that combines to make a great song.

Here are the two things I like best about the subject of music:

1. Two intellegent (or not) people who have similar tastes in art, films, literature, architecture, religion, and everything else can have totally different preferences in music and still be friends (unless my friend likes to drive by my house with his 3500 Watt amplifier cranked up so high that it shakes the fillings out of my teeth).

2. You can usually tell the age of a commentor even if he doesn't tell you.

You see, it is each generation's solemn duty to latch onto whatever comes around that is guaranteed to drive the previous generation crazy.

Here's how people from age 12 to 18 can tell if you are on the right track:

a. Your dad storms into your room and says, "TURN THAT RACKET (or CRAP, or JUNK, or ...) DOWN!"
b. You say, "That's not Racket, that's Music."
c. Your dad says, "Music? You call that Music? That's not Music! Now (put the name of some really old group or individual performer here), that's Music."

Regards,

Dave

Re: Music

I absolutely agree about your "generation gap" music theory. I can only laugh at myself when I hear someone listening to rap and I think "that's not music that's just noise!" hehe-- to each his own.

Your friend theory, has a flaw in my opinion:

Or maybe I am flawed (which is highly likely) and this explains why I don't have any friends. I am a music control freak. I get frustrated listening to music that I don't like. My wife has long ago learned to let me listen to what I want -- even if it is "angry music" in her classification... Music can come between a friendship!

Re: Music

Right now I am listening to Godsmack...

The funny thing is that I like much of the same music as my parents (except for folk ). I realized this one day when my headphones accidentally got unplugged from the computer and my father recognized an old rock band, Iris: "Hey, we used to dance to this!".

Although I am kind of the rock guy myself, I even like Rap

"[...]You have to defend Rap Music. [...] People say:"That's not music, that's garbage!""
"I love all the young rappers today, but it's hard to defend this sh.."
(Chris Rock, the Never Scared show)

And Classical music is great when you really want to concentrate but not hear all the phones ring - I listen to it loud (but use headphones).
I have even caught myself nodding to some pop music (to the disappointment of my friends, so Darrin does have a point), therefore I guess all music is good.
I don't sing, out of respect for the people around me, if you know what I mean.

Regards,
Lucian

"Skinny Legs and All"

Thanks for this, it cracked me up. I like the thoughts expressed here, music (movies, literature) are best appreciated by the audience of one (the reciever) and seem to have less to do with the content and more to do with the context. Some days I want to hear someone complaining about it all and others, not so much.

I tend to lean toward the so called "angry music" dsmith refers to like Nine Inch Nails, KMFDM and System of a Down. Yet I may go from that to some Miles Davis in consecutive breaths. The jarring nature is almost musical itself. Jump on back to something fun like old (by old I mean released first on vinyl) such as Van Halen's Running With the Devil. Sprinkle on top some Nazareth or Ted Nugent and Pink Floyd. Such are the pains my poor CD player (and others within earshot) must endure.

Perhaps it is just the nature of Art. Some will like it, some will hate it, but hopefully they will have an opinion. In this sense the artist has completed the task. Likely causing that wonderful line,

"Turn that CRAP down before I come up there and force you to listen to my CRAP!"

The most fun thing about this subject matter is I could change music for books or movies (or perhaps programming languages or source formatting styles) and the conversation would revolve just as it is now. In a purely likes and dislikes nature, no real RIGHT or WRONG in sight...

In that, the OP has succeeded smashingly!

Re: Music

I've found that industrial-style music is great to program to. The beat just sort of works for me. I also have an extensive collection of 80's and early 90's music, being a Gen Xer, but I also have quite a lot of "mood" music like Kitaro and Pure Moods.

I've always wondered how certain groups of people listen to the same music, usually to the exclusion of other genres. Probably the best example is the "cowboy". Growing up in Idaho, all the "farm kids" and rodeo club people listened to country music nearly all the time. To me it's a chicken & egg question: does the music listened to determine what group you join or vice versa? For me, since I have a wide and eclectic mix, I've never been part of one group or another, just had a few friends from various cliques.

I do have to say, about the only music I absolutely can't stand is hip-hop. I like old-school rap like the Beastie Boys, RunDMC, the Fat Boys, et al. but I hate the stuff that's mainstream now. Unfortunantly, simply everyone listens to it now, so I really can't get away from it.
