Hey guys,

I was thinking ...
Since most of the threads start with "Need help PLEASE !!!!", "Urgent homework !!!", and then our beloved senior members gets upset and then the purpose of the forum is not served.
Is there any way to make the code tags more "natural" to use for new members ? Is there a chance to display the guidlines like "commercials" next to the "post new thread" button ?

Any suggestions are welcome.

Hey that's not a bad idea. Maybe a button on the editor that would pop up a small window or something along those lines. Sort of like the little smilie window that pops up when you hit the more link. There is still lots of space left in the editor interface.

This should probably get moved to the site suggestions forum so it would have a better chance of being considered for addition.

I suggest that, if someone gets upset about a thread (inane title, lack of formatting, etc.), there a couple of options:

1. Ignore the post. Go on to something more amusing and edifying.

2. Give the Original Poster a clue about what is expected, but no helpful hints.

4. Give the Original Poster a clue about what is expected, and throw in a few hints.

5. Complete the homework assignment with the best, picture-perfect, code that you can come up with, thus ending the thread and getting rid of this annoying person. Maybe he/she won't be back. (Yeah --- right.)

6. Scream, shout, turn red in the face, jump up and down, and flame the newbie for not knowing how things work in my ideal universe where everyone follows the rules. (As Barney Fife once said, "The first rule is --- Obey All Rules!")

7. (Put additional option here).

The decision is yours.

P.S. If you think that six options are more than a "couple", consider the oft-heard expression: "Honest, Officer, I only had a couple of beers!"

I am glad you brought this up now. Some of us are busy preparing the forums for a much needed upgrade at a secret location on the WWW.

I'll consider adding something like that but I am already certain it will also be ignored, as usual.

In the meantime, I would like to suggest everything (except No.6) from Dave's list as well. No.1 is my favourite choice, especially if I am stressed and may post/say something I wouldn't like someone to tell me.

7. Wait for me to get to the thread and correct it

I don't think there are issues with getting upset, but rather not being able to answer all the questions with such poor organization...
The idea is appreciated, but I find the sticky thread at the top of the Forum pretty obvious; if they were into reading Guidelines it would be hard for them not to notice it. And the really "annoying" posters refuse reading the Rules (or acting accordingly, if done so) even after being repeatedly asked to.
But maybe a better organization idea will be generated by this thread, who knows?

Here is my suggestion to short circuit the people that refuse to read the guidelines.

Put a button below the smilies that by color draws the eye. The text of which would be,
Win the...
And the heading in the new window reading ...

"... respect of your peers by folowing these simple rules."
Followed by the text of the Guidelines Thread.

Anyone want to bet that at least the button would be pushed.

Granted it may not get more people to actually use the tags, but I bet more people would actually see the thread instead of ignoring it.

Sheesh I'm in an odd mood today. Must be all the late night football games this weekend. Or maybe those couple of beers I had to wash down the pizza and pretzels.

I was thinking that for maybe the first 2 posts, the guidelines are automatcally displayed. If ignored then, well.... Mwaaa haa haaaa!!!

Also, code tag buttons should be placed on the input frame as suggested.

Or, in addition to your suggestion, for the first n (hey, it's a programming forum, right ? ) posts the posting user goes through the guidelines with "next" after each guideline.


Unfortunately,I could give some ideas from my basic training .
My direct commander was fond of watching me run with heavy loads at unreasonable times of the day (night) . But I'm optimistic ! Hey, at least I got to see the sunrise (and sunset for that matter) for two and a half month straight (while running)
