Google enters the Instant Messaging arena

It started with ICQ and Microsoft, Yahoo and AOL followed to make Instant Messaging a huge Internet phenomenon. Yesterday a new (but familiar) combatant entered into the fray - Google launched its Google Talk Beta client and platform which is based on the open source Jabber protocol. I haven't tried it out yet, but I hear that its a pretty clean and fast client.

It is also spreading rumours that Google may not be done with this launch and that it may eventually buyout an IM/VoIP company with Skype being an often mentioned candidate. It is also interesting to note that it was only last week that Google decide to do a secondary stock sale to raise about $4 billion.

So has anyone tried it out yet? The only requirements seem to be a GMail account and Windows 2000/XP.

i just tested it. its nicer than skype i think... but in terms of functionality, its losing out to all the other IMs now. But nonetheless, its still in beta afterall. So right now i am using it as a gmail notifier alternative, since it can check gmails for u. as for my contacts, theres only a fwe friends in there. haha. I would hope to be able to chat with my hotmails and msn friends using this Google Im

Yes. Very interesting indeed. I really am CURIOUS about what on earth google is doing. Holding a huge database of the worlds information =/ And they are really mysterious about what they are doing too.

On the other hand, i can't wait for OSx to be launch on Intel chips! thats like Linux and a very friend GUI bundled together
