Power Calibration Error

I have the Power Calibration Error. I had this problem a few months ago, everyone I asked said the burner most likely had fried, or the media was bad. Both answers were false. I was using Memorex CDRs and even tried other brands. A firmware update did nothing. I was about to go buy a new burner but before I did, I had to reformat and reinstall, and what do ya know? Right after that I could burn with no problems at all. Now I can still burn using any CDRW, but now when I tried to make a permanent cd with a CDR, the power calibration error is back again. THat was an hour ago, then I tried another CDRW, burned without any problem. In fact, as I type, I am sucessfully burning to a RE-writable. Both the CDR and CDRW were 700 MB.
I use both Nero and Easy CD Creator, and both were giving the same error.
So, the question is, why CAN i burn to a CDRW, but get the error when using a CDR? If the burner was bad, it would not burn to anything.

Yes, I have noticed this too...

Sometimes, re-installing Windows will (temporarily) revive your cd writer, sometimes not.

If you think that's weird, here's something I can share with you: My previous PC, I set it up to dual boot between Windows ME & Linux RH. When my CD-writer stopped working on Windows (cannot read or write), I could still use it to read CDs with Linux!

The burn process for a CD-R and a CD-RW are different so its not unusual for this.

The Power Calibration error is mainly caused by bad media or a faulty drive but can also be caused by other and more difficult issues.

You stated that you were using 700MB Discs, have you tried 650MB and also try a few different brands. See www.cd-burner-help.com

Another common cause of the Power Calibration Error was dust getting inside the CD Burner and damaging the CD Burner. Did you ever see how much dust gathers inside your PC? You may want to invest in some PC cleaning protects such as cans of compressed air and also good dust cover.
