Partial screen capture

I am a inexperienced programmer working in Visual C++ trying to create a program that can actually 'see' what is onscreen on multiple different applications at once. Is there a way to capture bitmaps of all or part of the current screen (i.e. provide coordinates to a method that will then 'take a picture' of a portion of the screen and return a bitmap of it?)

Thank you in advance for any replies.

If you want to see only applications, why won't you figure out which programs are running and shown on desktop ( programs with windows) and take their DC
