[Linux] Why doesn't using my mouse wheel work?

OS: Linux RH 7.1
Mouse: Logitech with Mouse Wheel.

I thought I had misconfigured the mouse in my previous install, however, I just re-installed Linux ( for the hundreth time ) and I cannot use my mouse wheel to scroll any window on Linux!

Is this not supported in Linux? Have I just not switched something on? Am I just blind? Will I stop asking questions in my question?

I have no knowledge of linux, but I thought I'd do a quick search and I came up with this: http://www.linuxnetmag.com/en/issue5/m5mouse1.html

Once again, I am replying to old posts, but if someone searches for this topic, I thought that I would put in my $0.02.

The link given suggests two fixes, of which I have tried both. By far the simplest and most straightforward is the modification to the XF86Config file. Your entry should look like this:

Code:
Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse0" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2" Option "Device" "/dev/mouse" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection

My installation has XF86Config under the directory of /etc/X11. I know that this location may differ. If you don't know where it is type in this command to find it:

Code:
find / -iname XF86Config

On a side note, for my laptop, the "Protocol" was originally "Auto". This was great, because it would detect whether a mouse was plugged in and where it was and then load the proper driver. Unfortunately, the scroll wheel won't work without explicitly stating the "Protocol" to be "IMPS/2". Worse yet, X won't start if the mouse is not found... Does anyone have any work arounds for this?

Also, one last comment on scrolling in X. It has spoiled me because it is a little different than scrolling in Windows. In windows, the scroll button works on the active window. On X, the scroll button works on the window over which the mouse is hovering, which does not need to be active. So you don't need to activate or even bring to the front a window to scroll it. This may seem like a small thing, but sometimes it is the small things that make the difference.
