How to set up your 'own' Name Servers?I was setting up a subdomain on my Domain Manager at RegisterFly.com when I started reading a FAQ on Setting up your own Nameservers.
IOW, I could theoretically speaking, set up my website (GIDHelp.com) to use : NS1.GIDHELP.COM NS2.GIDHELP.COM To do this I need 2 unique IP addresses (...fair enough). My question. Can I use the IP addresses of my webhost's nameserver? e.g. if my webhost's nameserver was NS1.EXAMPLEHOST.COM and NS2.EXAMPLEHOST.COM and I get the IPs from these nameservers... Let's assume they resolve to: 123.234.1.2 123.234.1.3 Can I set up my nameservers as : NS1.GIDHELP.COM -> 123.234.1.2 NS2.GIDHELP.COM -> 123.234.1.3 Would it work, you think? I am too chicken to try it on my live sites, a mistake might render the site offline for up to 4 days! __________________

Update on my CUSTOM NAMESERVER experiment so farJune 5th, 2003.
Yesterday I added the 2 nameservers: NS1.DESILVA.BIZ NS2.DESILVA.BIZ to the list of nameservers for this website, www.desilva.biz and so far, so good. (So, right now, the website has 4 nameservers listed to it). Over the weekend when traffic is usually much less, I will disable the 2 original nameservers: NS1.CPANEL.DXON.NET NS2.CPANEL.DXON.NET and hope the site doesn't go into oblivion. If it works, well, hey! we all learn something really cool to do with our websites. If it doesn't then see you guys on Wednesday! ![]() __________________

the magic is all in resolving....
it not about names, it's about ip's if ns1.example.com resolves to 123.123.123.123 and ns1.sitehostedonexample.com resolves to 123.123.123.123 there is no problem. when you request example.com your isp will lookup example.com and tell you that example.com is 123.123.123.123. you will open a connection to 123.123.123.123 and tell that you are looking for example.com. |

So now assuming this works and all is well, we have to start asking ourselves why does no one else do this. Infact most webhost will imply that this is something 'extra' (offering private nameservers etc.) in their listed plans, especially for resellers.
Once again, assuming this works, there is no stopping ANY website from making these changes! Which is great for the little guy, no? Meanwhile I will scour the Net and investigate what the popular 'webmaster-type sites' are using as their nameservers, just to get a perspective of how useful this information can be. <search results> sitepointforums.com : NS2.RACKSPACE.COM zend.com: NS1.EASYDNS.COM php.net: NS1.EASYDNS.COM webmasterworld.com: NS.WESTHOST.NET freewebspace.net: NS1.MAXIMUMSERVER.COM </search results> __________________

this just confirms what I said before.... it's all about numbers.... no matter where you get the ip, as long as it's in the named files and resolves to the correct ip. btw, did you check that ns1 and ns2.desilva.biz resolve to the same ip as NS1 and NS2.CPANEL.DXON.NET |

Yes, I have confirmed and re-confirmed... why? Did you find something that I should know about? __________________

the only thing i found out that those addresses are not resolving on 3 hosts, but ns1.desilva.biz is resolving on 1 host. but the good news is that my isp resolves them |

I have that setup for one of my domains. In my case I just had my registrar flag the domain as a nameserver and point it to my web host's name-servers. All in all, it makes no real difference.

According to that it makes a difference to have the nameservers in the same TLD as your website. It's much better to have your nameservers as: NS1.DIV.CA NS2.DIV.CA instead of ns.control-access14.com People like you and me (i.e. .ca / .biz), we might as well do this. __________________
