what do u mean by "System lock"?

Anyway, if u are connecting via lan cables or through wireless / USB modems, Linux would auto detect the settings without any configuring at all. Unless u are using some ancient linux systems, or perhaps slackware ?

Is it a Winmodem? If so, Linux doesn't have the drivers built-in to make it work (hence the name "Win(dows)modem"). You might try http://www.linmodems.org/ to see if your modem is listed.

Hmmmm.... I've had this issue too with Mandriva. It recognizes my Microsoft Speedstream Wireless USB adapter but it for some reason won't connect. I've set up DHCP and tried it with static addresses, and I have also disabled the firewall. Any ideas? FYI, it would be connected to a windows network, if that would matter.
Thanks!
