Why do we need PHP by itself?

Hi,

I know that PHP is a very powerful language when it is coupled with MySQL, a flat-file db, or some other database. You can make guestbooks, surveys/polls, quizzes (with result-tracking), forums, content managers, and a lot of other things. But I really don't see many uses for PHP by itself.

I know that you can use it for templating (although many people use MySQL for that too) and e-mail forms. You could probably also create a simple quiz (although a client-side language would do just as well). I have heard that it can also be used to automate tasks on the server, which is very helpful indeed. Anything else?

JdS will become famous soon enough
I use PHP solely for web development. I don't know of any other use for it besides this.

I am still learning everyday; just like today - so I am not too eager to try to figure out stuff with it that does not concern web development.

I am not sure how wise it would be to try to write software for example, (even if it were possible) with PHP, it's simply NOT the right tool for the 'job'.

Well, what other web-related uses are there for PHP? Besides e-mail forms, templating, and simple non-tracking quizzes.

I'm subscribed to mailinglists at php.net
I'm also (trying) to help improving the php.net site.

try http://phpweb.allowee.no-ip.biz/echo and try to change the language (view the *** version)
and then try http://phpweb.allowee.no-ip.biz/manu...ction.echo.php
and change again, it should work (you will see 'Dutch' in the list)
