Setting up a ModemAnybody reading this someday... please help me out:
1. My Modem = Blue Thunder 56Kbps V.90 External. 2. I have the Linux drivers for the modem with me. 3. Linux RedHat version 7.1 (I am using KDE). 4. When I setup Linux with Gnome, the modem simply worked (and I managed to surf the web a bit) but with using KDE - nothing! I just don't know how to setup a new hardware on Linux as one would do on a Windows box. That's my problem! and i don't know how to setup the drivers on my Linux system. |

Drivers? Linux doesn't have drivers! Use KPPP for a dialer

yes, indeed, u are right... i looked my modem CD again and found no LINUX drivers.... hmmm, i donno what made me think i had it!
so, that still does not solve my problem, i tried to fiddle with the KPPP dialer but failed miserably - so any clear instructions on how to set up my modem to connect to the Internet will be simply super. |

It's external, so it's not a Winmodem. This site has taught me all I need to know: www.linuxdoc.org This page may help www.tldp.org Garth Farley |

I must admit I'm the same. I've only a 4gig HD, and with 1gig of MP3s (and increasing) I wasn't able to keep it.
I originally had Win NT. So alongside it I tried Linux Redhat 7.2. The installation disk musta been buggered, as the so-called non-destructive disk-druid ended trashing my windows partition. So I wiped all & reinstalled Win NT. Finally installed Linux, squeezed it down to 750Mb. Then got a copy of Win 2k, one of the pre-release versions, beta 2 I think. I was told it was really good. I tried it & it buggered up both my existing Win NT & Linux partitions So I wiped all (again) & started again, got a new, shrink-wrapped copy of Win 2k & haven't got around to trying Linux again. Now with my MP3s, there's only 800MB left. I'm thinking I'll buy an external CDRW. They're about 250Euro, which isn't too bad. If I can burn my not-so-favourite MP3s on to a disk, I'll be grand & will try Linux again. The advantages of Linux were so apparant beside Win NT, proper APM & ACPI support, proper (if that's the word you'd use to recompiling kernel) PCMCIA support, anti-aliasing (which only XP has got yet), integrated firewall. and a serious amount of fiddle factor & tweaking You had so much free software, Apache, PHP, Perl, MySql, Star Office, KOffice, C & C++ compilers........ but Win 2000 can do al that now too. Win 2000 hasn't crashed on me yet, with virus software & firewall online. I'm seriously wondering if I'll bother again. Garth Farley |
