Yahoo may launch publishing network this week

It seems that Yahoo will announce the launch of its (much awaited) Yahoo Publisher Network (YPN) on Wednesday. So says this report at News.com:
http://news.com.com/Yahoo+to+launch+...3-5815551.html
Quote:
Yahoo is planning to launch on Wednesday an ad network for small Web publishers intended to strengthen its hand against rival Google, a source familiar with the plan told CNET News.com.

As previously reported, the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company has been working for months on a self-serve advertising service tailored to bloggers and other small Web publishers, a move that homes in on Google's territory.

No word yet on what type of TOS they will sport, but rumour has it that they may have some traffic requirements (preference for US traffic). The above article also mentions that the program will differ from Google's Adsense in that it will add human editorial to the selection of ads for content pages.

"Wednesday" as in a few hours from now?

You have to wonder how the story leaked though... If it is true, this news is going to help Google steal the thunder on launch day. Google is infamous for being able to come up with something incredible at times like these.

Now I have 2 things to look forward to...

It looks like Yahoo will do a beta with about 2,000 sites for a few months, launching near the end of this year. What from I hear, the beta will be limited to American sites so we'll have to see how it goes. More details now available on their site:

http://publisher.yahoo.com/

Edit - From the above site:
Quote:
If you're interested in being considered for the Yahoo! Publisher Network beta program, please enter your information below. Participants of the program must be a resident of the U.S., with valid U.S. Social Security number or Tax ID.

Disappointing indeed...

At least in the email they sent out today, there is NO mention of "Americans only". The most relevant bit is highlighted in the excerpt below:

Quote:
... If you haven't received an invitation yet, please be assured that we will be extending additional invitations over the course of the coming weeks and months. ...

No wonder Google has not even moved a muscle, this wasn't the "launch" I was expecting.

It may begin as a local service since it's beta, but I'm sure it'll be widely spread around the world in a short time. Yahoo has to act globally, because it has global rivals.

I think Yahoo.com receives the most pageviews accrossed their site followed by Google.

Although Yahoo.com gets more pageviews, Google still receives a larger share of the pageviews when it comes to searching the Web.

I have also heard that MSN is planning on doing a program like YPN and Adsense.
