a significant problem after installing Xphi to all
please help me . i have a significant problem after installing windows Xp . the problem is that when i install windows xp after 1 or 2 or maybe sometimes 5 restarts or shutdowns my computer doesn't bootup correctly . i mean that it freezes for more than 4 min on the "Welcome screen" but welcome message is not shown on the screen instead it's written "windows is starting up" after that the windows boots up and passes this long boot process and i get to the desktop screen i see that my sound card and modem are uninstalled . Xp theme is disabled and many parts of control panel does not work . my computer specs: HDD : 80 GB Maxtor VGA : SIS 630 Sound card : C-Media CPU : intel 1100 MHZ RAM : 128 MB SDRAM Mother board : ASUS it's 3 years that i'm using this computer and never had such problem with xp but almost 5 months ago it occured by itself and after 3 months fixed by itself . i couldn't understand what the problem was . now again this problem has occured . i am sure that it is not viruse or such thing because i have searched for viruses by almost every antiviruse available . even by the internet so it can not be viruse . i thought that it may be my Motherboard's Battery . i replaced it with a new one but it was no use . i even have tried almost 10 different versions and XP CDs but it was no use . i can't figure out it's software or hardware problem i hope some one can help . tanx :-( |

i forgot to say ...the only thing that i forgotted to say is that this time (not the first time that i had this prob ) i used NTFS file system and after completing the installation this error came away . i think that must be the reason ofcourse i reinstalled the windows and this time used FAT32 . by the way , i tried win 2000 and i had the same prob with that . now i'm using win98 with no prob .
i'm wondering who can solve this prob . thanks in advance. |

Well, it's been awhile since I've had to mess w/ XP, but I think there's something within the "Services" window that lets you enable certain ones at startup. You might also type "msconfig" in the "Run..." window on the Start menu; it should let you choose what to run at startup.

How often do you reinstall XP? Do you format the drive first or just reinstall it over itself? If there's residual code on the drive, theoritically it could cause issues. Plus XP wasn't designed to be reinstalled a lot, I mean as opposed to Win98 or something. (Common practice in the Win95/98 days was to reformat and reinstall Windows once or twice a year to keep it running smooth. The registry would get corrupted and orphaned files would build up.)

i'm sorry the prob came back againhi guys .
:-( the problem came back again , it was fine just for one time . ofcourse this time after each reinstall i have just two services disabled "alerter" and "themes" . thats all my problem . i reinstall my xp very often . because i use alot of programs on my computer and it gets messed up very soon . to install it sometimes i format the drive and sometimes i delete the contents by win98 . i'm sure that there is nothing from the old xps . Even once i used fdisk and partitioned my hard but the problem did not go away . don't you think it can be sth wrong with the motherboard ? or haven't you ever seen someone having such problem crystalattice tanx crystalattice . i'm waiting for your answer |

XP isn't like the older Windows; it's not supposed to be reinstalled that often (if ever). I can't say for certain that constant reinstalls caused your problem, but anything is possible (especially w/ MS products; they don't play well with others).
TBH, I haven't encountered your problem before so I don't know exactly how to fix it. Are you using the XP upgrade via Win98? If so, try an fdsik/format then boot off the XP disc. It should ask you during the install to insert the 98 disc for verification, then continue on w/ the XP install. This way you aren't dealing w/ any issues caused by 98 being upgraded. __________________

i could not notice your advicetanx Crystalattice for your advice . but i could not figure your last advice out . would you plz repeat it in a more clearer way .
your help is really appreciated . by the way when i install Xp alone ( i mean when i have just xp on my pc not two operating systems installed ) i don't have this problem . and another point is that this problem sometimes occures with win 2000 not just with xp . now i am going to reinstall my windows to see wether it fixes the problem or not . thank you my friend |

To rephrase my last post: are you using an XP upgrade version or XP full version? If you are using the upgrade version that requires you have a previous Windows version already on your computer, then try the following:
1. Delete your hard drive by using fdisk and format to ensure it's completely erased. 2. Boot off the XP upgrade CD; you don't have to have Windows already on your computer. 3. During the XP install process, it will ask you to insert a previous Windows version CD such as Win98. Insert the disc, hit "Enter", and remove the disc. 4. Reinsert the XP upgrade disc and finish the install. XP doesn't actually need a previous Windows version to upgrade from. It only needs to see that you "own" a previous version. The upgrade version of XP, to my knowledge, is the same as the full install version except that it has this extra bit of code to look for the disc. At least, my XP upgrade disc let me install it this way. __________________
