Need some basic info on how to view pages hosted on local network ApacheHello, I am running WAMP5 on an XP Pro box, and I have set up Apache enough so that I can see my hosted pages when I look at 127.0.0.1 on the server machine itself, but how do I set up Apache so that I can view the hosted pages elsewhere? So say the the server is 192.168.1.2 (for example) and I am on machine 192.168.1.3, would I just simply have to type 192.168.1.2 once the Apache server is setup so that I can view the hosted pages? OF course I only need to know how to access them after I find out how to setup Apache so that I CAN access them. Is it something that I have to do in the httpd.conf file?
Thanks in advance for putting up with me. |

Hi,
why dont you try XAMP www.apachefriends.org It is very easy to use and with the click of 1 button it installs : * Apache HTTPD 2.0.54, * MySQL 4.1.12, * FileZilla FTP Server 0.9.8a, * phpMyAdmin 2.6.2-pl1, * OpenSSL 0.9.7g, * eAccelerator 0.9.3, * and more ... good luck |

After spending the better part of a day trying to get apache set up under CygWin I finally gave up and took the easy way out with the XAMPP link posted above. I was pretty much a no-brainer to get it up and running. One thing to note though, make sure to go and close the gaps in security once you have it installed. Mostly just a matter of adding passwords. Just follow the advice given on their website.
But that is not my question. All I really wanted was to have someplace to play with some php code, not to have to learn the ins and outs of the joys of webservers. Now that I have it working, what is the best way to set up a test site? I can see where the test pages are feeding from. Would it be best to just wedge a link in to the test pages and build a simple test site from there? My only concern is that by testing my code in a frame (the content one) will I cause myself trouble while testing code that will eventually be run in a non-frame environment? My knowlege of this area is none to slimmer than that so a simple explanation (or even a simple set of html pages) that I could use would be great. Like I said, I am not looking to learn html, just to have a simple testing setup for php. Or, as I remember hearing in a movie once, "Tell it to me like I'm a three year old." (only thing is, these days at least, a three year old most likely has a better grasp of this stuff than I do.) I do have to give the Apache folks credit. I was able to build 2.0.54 from source on my machine using the unix source package. My problems started when starting to look into the configuration. I didn't even make it to trying to build php. XAMPP seems to be just the ticket for what I want. Thanks, Mark __________________

Hello, cable_guy_67
Well from my experience Just make sure you book mark the login to the admin as you know that you can go thier thru that test page. So bookmark it then delete all pages and images that say index then you can upload a nice clean index page to work with. But let say if you do have any problem later with your script and it messes things up then just do a reinstallment again you seen how easy it is to install is that easy to uninstall also. Also have you tried their forum for that question there is good support their. Good luck |

Yeah, I can do that I guess. I had wedged a page in (after renaming their index) but I guess I was looking for a better way to do it. Maybe just putting a link to my test site on their index would be the way to go. You weren't kidding about the ease of installation. Must have took all of 45 minutes including going through and getting all the passwords etc set up. I guess that is what I will do. Thanks for the link to the package. Considering what I wanted to use it for it really was the ticket. Mark __________________
