A Stupid Question

I have just recently decided to jump into the ocean of designing (that’s web designing) for which I am interested in learning different languages and tools to communicate with the species under water (browsers and servers).

So the question is which language and which tool will remain the finest, for hmmm lets say about all eternity (well I won’t be living for that long but I certainly need my work to remain there)

Every comment is welcome accept for dishearten one’s

A text editor will handle anything, beside drawing pictures (unless you want ASCII art ).

I don't see HTML going away anytime soon and CSS is always good to know. Javascript is also valuable but most of the things you'll want to do are already available on the 'net.

A graphics program is nice to have. You can go full blown w/ Photoshop, cheap like Paint Shop Pro, or free like Gimp.

Those are my recommedations for cheap and long lasting use. If you want something flashier and possibly user-friendly, go w/ Dreamweaver.

Pencil and paper. No wait, that'll go bad after a while. Chisle and stone? That'll be around for close to eternity....

Haven't used ASP so I can't really say anything about it, other than, personally, I use open-source tools when possible to avoid vendor lock-in and better compatibility.

With Macromedia soon to be bought by Adobe, the only major contender to Dreamweaver (apart from Frontpage) will probably be combined with it. Adobe GoLive was trying hard to be like DW, but many people felt it still falls short. However, it has better integration w/ Photoshop and other Adobe products, so you might consider that if you use Adobe products. Frontpage can cause headaches if you rely on FP extensions; they make life easier but then you get the dreaded "vendor lock-in".

Personally, when I've saved up the $$ (and got my business license), I will probably buy DW, or whatever Adobe has turned it into if that happens soon.

alcedo will become famous soon enough
For image processing: Adobe Photoshop
For coding: note pad / homesite is enough
For GUI editing: Dreamweaver, and if you can afford, go for Adobe GoLive*™
For Animations, use flash

For server site scripting, use PHP. i have been using php for quite sometime already, and i havent come accross a situation in which PHP cant handle.

IMHO, i think its better than ASP. since its open source and free. Its also heavily documented as well, with loads of resouces to learn from from the open communities.
