Question

new celeron faster than P4???

Someone has told me the new celeron processors (2.8-3 Ghz) can
run faster than the Pentium 4...is this true??? ??:
I figure if your running large applications and games, the pentium 4 would be your best bet....is this wrong?
Please help....thanx

It been awhile since I last looked into Intel but if I'm correct the new celeron's are good chips and much cheaper then the P4 plus they now support all that the P4 supports.

Here is a link that tells a lot more.

Hope this helps.

L2 cache?

This was the article I read too...
And the summary was that the L2 cache is much smaller in the celeron.
So I'm assuming the celeron is still not as powerful as the P4.

The Celeron will never be as powerful as the P4; it's designed to be the budget-level chip for "low-end" computers. Normally they are P4 chips that didn't make the grade (like some of the L1/L2 cache doesn't work well) so they are crippled and sold cheaper.

You really need to decide how much power you need. The top-end Celeron should do as well as a low/mid level P4. IMO, you might want to consider AMD's chips; they're generally cheaper and give better performance than Intel, but it's ultimately a personal choice.

You might want to look at the CPU sections of Tom's Hardware Guide or Anandtech for comparison guides.

OK... One of the advantages of knowing some peeps that work at Intel.
Here's what my Intel buddy had to say:

"I Just went and looked at the post he has it wrong it is not that a
Celeron is faster than a P4 as they are the same thing. Celeron is a P4 with some
functionality turned off. It is the Centrino Laptop processor (based of P3) can be faster than some of the P4's even when it is running at a slower clock speed."

It's always a hard choice, Intel or AMD. If you're a gamer, you will most definitely pick an AMD processor, which has much better performance when it comes to games.
But multitasking is also very important, in which, Intel is much better than AMD is, that's a fact.

As of the topic, well, I don't think that a Celeron could be faster than a P4. Just as someone said it before me, it's a budget processor, casically a "dumb" P4. Unless it is something very new technology, there's little to no chance that a Celeron could be faster than a P4.
