XP Home (OEM) crashed & will not boot

I am in need of some help and appreciate any help in advance. My HP laptop crashed yesterday and will not boot. I go to Recovery Console via the CD and get a C: prompt. I cannot Change Directories or Copy - all because Access is Denied. Chkdsk comes back good but chkds/r runs for 3-6 hours, gets to 50% then results in "Portions of this volume appear to be unrecoverable" or something similar. I am trying to avoid the dreaded Format and losing my data.

Any ideas?

Also, since I have tried a myriad of things, I now get the following when I first turn on my PC:
NTLDR is missing
Press CTR+ALT+DEL to restart

Things are getting worse....

If chkdsk will not complete you are most likely looking at a Hard Drive failer. A program like SpinRite mite help. You also mite be able to give some of your data with ERD2003 or ERD2005 or Bert Pe, UBCD4Win. You also could pull the HD and put it in to a USB HD box and plug it in to differt computer and try to save your data. USB HD boxs 2.5" Note book drives can be had for around $20.00 us. I have 3 or them.

Ntldr

if NTLDR (NT Loader) is missing then you can try reinstalling the Operating System, first i'd recommend that you completely remake your hd partitions, using fdisk or maybe Partition Magic or something of the sort, ntldr is basically a file of XP which loads everything and reinstalling should hopefully fix your problem, hope this helps.. snipe!
