My vote is XP Pro. The support is still there for 2000 but XP support will be around longer and i'ts a very stable o/s.

See if you can get an educational discount for it. Not sure if Pro is valid as an educational buy but it's worth checking if you can save several 100 dollars.

Xp

XP is definitely the way to go, chances are you will need a new one in a few years anyway as microsoft and more popular games and software developers will simply stop using older systems, microsoft allready no longer support 95/98 and ME, 2000 seems to still be supported mainly because most business who are stupid enough not to use linux or equivelant are using 2000, if you want more stability and security features put 2000 on, if you want absolute n00b simplicity put XP on, if possible get SP1 as opposed to SP2 as it still has a few issues at the minute. As far as home or pro is concerned, deferences are only some networking features, i've never used home in depth as i have professional but i would assume that these "features" arent that different anyway.

I think Win XP is certainly the better one.
