Do you have the most recent XP drivers installed? What's the speed difference between the two OS's? Is the DVD-burner's firmware up-to-date? Is the burner on a seperate cable from the hard drive?

What happens if you change the write speed? Does it let you or will it give you an error message? Have you tried changing the brand of disc?

I don't really know why XP won't work as well as 98, unless the drivers have issues. What happens if you use XP's CD-burner software?

I'm not sure what the problem may be, though it appears it's definitely a Windows issue and not hardware. What version of XP are you using (SP1, SP2, Home, Pro)?

Did you have this problem under SP1? SP2 caused some problems with certain system configurations so you might want to check that you have the latest compatible drives for your burner.
