Downloadable document compatibilty issues?I made a CD resume in Swish (its like Flash) & I added a button to download my resume from the CD. The resume was made on a PIII 600 with Word 2000. I want my resume to be viewed as easily as possible, are there any compatiblity issues I should be aware of? Does the target user have to have Word 2000? Is there any Flash issues that would cause problems? Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.
If you need to view my file it is for download at: http://uniteddistributorscanada.hypermart.net/ Thank you |

I can't see there being a problem with the usage of a windows 2000 document file since they are so widespread and accepted. I would however, try and avoid any fancy fonts or symbols as the chances of compatibility worsen. Anything Sans serif will be fine.
I do however, suggest you cover all your bases and create not just a .doc resume, but also a PDF version. There's a good thread somewhere on the site for free PDF creators if you aren't willing to splash out on Adobes. I can't see there being a problem with flash, but I highly recommend that you integrate some sort of button to minimise the screen so people don't have to mess about if the browser screen is hidden behind. Not sure if this would happen but it is possible I suppose. I suggest not to directly link to the file/s, but instead a page with the document files and possibly links to Acrobat reader and there's a Microsoft document viewer kicking around somewhere if someone can remind me. |

Thanks jrobbio,
Thats a good point about making a pdf version of my resume, but how would that work, & how would I set that up? If the person clicks on a button in my CD presentation that says "Download Resume" how would my Cd presentation know which version to downloadwould to the target users computer, is there some special script to detect if the target user has adobe acrobat or Microsoft Word? Or does it mean I have to create 2 download buttons, 1 for pdf resume & 1 for word resume documents. How would you set it up? Thanks |

how to make a pdf fileHave a look at this thread:
]Make PDF's for free I don't think you read my thread correctly when I said link to a html page not directly to the file. At least that way you've got the freedom to change the filenames and those without permanent connections have a somewhat normal procedure and know what they are downloading for certain. Another reason is that when you click on a download for documents or PDF's in internet explorer, it instantly opens them instead of downloading so it could get incredibly messy for the user.
