Introducing GIDZipTest!

Introducing GIDZipTest, a simple web page compression / gzip test online tool.

Online Gzip / Deflate Compression Tester.

It's just half done, few more strokes of the keyboard and it should display some detailed information next.

Please test it out and if you find errors, let me know here...

Hopefully this tool will be useful to some of us.

Nice script! Now I can easily see if the server is compressing the page properly or not

GIDZipTest is 3/4 done now...

Thank you Andrew...

It looks a whole lot better now that I managed to get a nice little table showing / reporting after each submission.

All I need now is someone here to try the odd url once in a while just to see how the script handles it....

As usual, I will appreciate any feedback or suggestions.

Wow I'm impressed how far you've gone in such a short time on this. I tested a few sites that I knew had Gzip and I really think you should test out http://slashdot.org. For some reason though, it claims that http://www.slashdot.org is uncompressed although I'm pretty sure that is nothing to do with the program.

Test it on your site and have a look at the logs its a professional job we are looking at here.

Well done Jay

Rob
p.s. loving the free ad. for my site.

Well, the script was not written in just one day although it might seem like it - I've had it on my local machine for weeks now

Yeah I saw it, the header on slash.dot - funny... Nothing alarming about testing their URL with the WWW bit, they just have a re-direct, 301 (Permanent) - probably not wanting to confuse the SE bots with 2 different domain names to the site, that's all.

re: the mention of your site
There should be more links to active (GIDForums™) members' sites spread all over the site in my future articles...

I didn't think it was a one day job, but you certainly sprung it up on us.
Cool idea on the active members plugs. I certainly appreciate it although it wasn't the reason why I have frequented so much

I look forward to seeing what else you have to put on it since you claim its still beta.

What's in store for GIDZipTest?

Rob

I am stuck with trying to show just how much the page is compressed compared to the uncompressed version (if the web page was gzipped of course).

Then for those that do not do the gzip thingy, just how much each compression level would save them. < this one is easy!

I just found out using GIDzip test that my host had upgraded to PHP4.31 lol
Anyone know anything about ensim 3.5 pro? That's what they are upgrading us to.

Is that what you use? Ensim? I have never hosted a site which offered that - I am extremely curious to know how different it is from CPanel.

In a recent poll on WHT, CPanel was the popular choice among webhosts too... so I don't know if Ensim was 'all that' before this new version came about.

The new version must be a really nice upgrade though, so you should look forward to it and keep us informed.

A couple of things: ensim and Gidziptest error

I apologise for spotting an error, but I thought you should know. I was just checking around to see if some sites were using compression when I mistyped the address like so http://www.phpkitchen.cin . Obviously this was wrong, but it came up with an undetermined error. I then tried typing in the correct one http://www.phpkitchen.com and I received the same error. I repeatedly tried to get past this with no success. I finally tried my site http://www.topfunwebsites.com and it managed to show to correct data. When I tried phpkitchen.com it worked as normal.

As for the new ensim, it seems to be a very powerful piece of software and my only gripe about it is that it doesn't compress the log files for downloading like I've had it in the past for cPanel. Its mega easy to create subdomains from any subdirectory and there is much better control onto how long each log file exists for.
It really has everything you'd expect and the skin that may host has made is really helpful. The traffic reports are also very good and helps with me predicting whether I'm going to go over the limit or not (currently safe). The best thing though is the backup facility (something I stupidly don't use), but I may try to soon saying that.

On a final note, you are now first for gzip test and 7th for gzip compression test.

Rob
