Installing Linux with Windows ME

This is for all the Linux users out there... yes Garth Farley, I am talking to you.

2 questions:
  1. Should I install as WORKSTATION or SERVER? I want to run Apache, MySQL, PHP and friends and start developing my sites on the Linux platform; instead of doing them on Windows like I do now. I selected SERVER.
  2. Firewall? I selected MEDIUM. What's a good setting for regular web surfing and the occasional upload via FTP?

This is exciting... I finally figured out how to install Linux on an existing Windows partition (i.e. on a single HDD) and even got the modem to work this time!

... Look out LinuxWorld, here I come!

OK, workstation is probably what you need. Server is usually set up as a mininal GUI and everyday tools, with the onus on performance and stability. Workstation should include pretty much every programming language compiler you know (along with a few you don't), and I think Apache & mySql are included.

As always with Linux distro's, everyone is different, so I advise you go into the Custom section, and make sure that everything you want it included. If it's a good distro, it'll warn you if you are forgetting stuff that'll break it, so don't worry about that.

If it's there, do try Wine once you get used to stuff. It can allow you to run windows programs, which is great.

Firewall as medium should be ok. It's built into the kernel as of recent versions. I wouldn't go for Strict unless you really want to select each & every port, protocol and preference.

Since you're using ME, you don't have to worry about filesystems. I use Windows 2000 on my (recently deceased ) laptop, and the NTFS system is Read-Only for linux. I'd so set up a third partition in FAT32 for them both to share.

Good luck with it!

Mounting a NTFS drive (NTFS 5.0 format)

That's interesting about NTFS; wouldn't something like:
Code:
mount -t ntfs /dev/hda1 /cdrive
work and make it 'read and write'?

My version of Linux is Red Hat 7.1 and the browser there is Netscape 4+. I want to install the latest version but don't know whether to stick with Mozilla or get Netscape. I would prefer Netscape since I don't have it on my Windows setup. What's your preference and why. Size of download matters...

How to install in Linux... this is something I will be figuring out sometime today.

Mozilla or Netscape? I dunno, they've both pretty much got the same engine. I prefer Mozilla purely because it's a little more standards compliant, open source and has a cool logo

To my knowledge, the Linux kernel doesn't have the ability to read to an NTFS partition, NTFS being quite a complex file system, and Microsoft not releasing the standard.
