Question

Page Rank vs. Google listing

As I understand it, Page Rank is a numerical value for a site based on how "valuable" it is on the 'net, i.e. the more links you have coming to your site, the higher the Page Rank. A higher Page Rank then leads to a better position on a Google search, moving you closer to the very first listing.

My observation is that it doesn't matter. With my site, my Page Rank is 0 but a search on Google puts me at #10. So why is my site listed so prominently on Google yet my Page Rank is so low?

A little detail but one that needs to be highlighted - page rank (as I understand it) is awarded to a web page, not the site.

Page rank does matter but like all good formulas, it's just one variable in the equation perhaps?

It's like salt to food, you know....

Okay. So if PR only applies to individual pages, then why is everyone so concerned about their Page Rank? Why do businesses advertise "we can increase your PR"? I guess, basically, what's the big deal about having a high PR?

I will give you an example...

You create a product that may not be worth much but you build an image around it, and all of a sudden everyone wants it.

PR is advertised as the basis to getting higher ranks in the search engines.

Google uses many factors, no limited to page rank -

In a perfect "google" world pr would be perfect to rank a site, however people figured out the link exchange makes your site look like it is more popular, and of course google caught on very quickly.

The behind the scenes is what we don't see -

"Weight" - google uses "weight" as another value for ranking your site -

Examples -

Link exchange - Lowers your weight
Link exchange with related site - Raises your weight
One way link from high PR site - Raises your weight
One way link from low PR site - lowers your weight
Link exchange from a site with really low PR - lowers your weight

"optimized" Many people are confused about the term as well...

Many people think "optimized" means do I have meta tags in my site -

Well meta tags don't really make a difference anymore -

You can be listed first with or without them.

Your site must be relavant to the keyword being search and the keywords in your text should be really close together

for example...

My computer site is the best computer site on the web, have you been to my computer site lately, check out the best computers today!

Trying to explain seo in one sit down is not really possible..but I hope I have given you a few pointers

>Link exchange - Lowers your weight

Does this mean that having unrelated link exchanges may effect your PR in a negative manner ?

Yes! PR = popularity; SERP ranking = relevance.

Well established sites with quality content will score high in both.

Re: Page Rank vs. Google listing

PR has nothing to do with the Google listings but it’s the links that matters to a site in getting the results in the top searches. PR is just a mere number which is given to a particular page which is calculated by G’s algorithm and a webmaster should not be much worried about it as there are many other important aspects to look up to.
